Is the Stage 2 bmw power kit worth it?? Additional Cooling that is??
I have a 335 N54:
I'm wondering if the Stage 2 bmw power kit is worth the $$ and Trouble?? Will it lower my temps well?? OR will it cause trouble?? Any insight welcome. Anyone have trouble installing it? Thanks in Advance. |

Based on my experience with my car, I wouldn't bother with the State 2 kit.
IMO, If you're going to spend $2k+, there are better things to spend it on (exhaust, different tune, FMIC, LSD, etc.). However, if you've had problems with your car overheating, or plan to track it, the cost might be worth it.

For what its worth...this is from the news letter I received from my dealership:
Version 1: New performance-optimized engine software. This version of the Power Kit was first introduced on the 335i BMW Performance Edition model in July of this year. Version 2: Includes the same software as Version 1, but also contains an auxiliary water cooler and an enhanced radiator fan to reduce the higher thermal stresses on the engine during extreme driving. BMW Dealers are offering a special introductory price on all Power Kits from now until the end of 2011. By installing either kit, horsepower is increased to 320hp, a 20hp increase. Torque is increased to 332 lb-ft (when equipped with an automatic transmission) and 317 lb-ft (when equipped with a manual or DCT transmission). You’ll also experience faster acceleration: 0.2 seconds faster than the standard 335i model from 0 mph to 60 mph. 0.5 seconds faster than the standard 335i model from 50 mph to 75 mph. For some models, the kit also produces an “exhaust burble” during engine overrun conditions, a new feature only applicable to Power Kits installed on 135i and 335i vehicles with engines manufactured from March 2010. These kits, specially developed in-house by BMW engineers to work with 135i and 335i vehicles, retain the original emission certification, maintain the original fuel efficiency ratings, and the vehicle’s original BMW Limited Warranty is not affected. Note: Power Kits should only be installed on 135i and 335i vehicles equipped with option code S840 (increased top speed limiter – which includes an additional oil cooler). |

Many thanks! The reason I'm considering stage 2 is because I need a new Bumper cover installed and Dealer will install PPK2 for $1,600. and install new Bumper included. I was apprehensive about adding an additional Component(Aux Radiator) that of course can and will fail. Thanks for Clarifying!! |

Wow, $1600 installed for Stage 2 plus a new bumper cover is a great deal. I'd probably jump on that too!
I wouldn't worry too much about having the extra component. Its essentially identical to the secondary oil cooler, except that its for coolant and not oil (and in the driver's side wheel well, vs. the passenger's side). So long as the dealer installs it correctly (and no reason why they wouldn't) it'll be just as fine as any other part of the cooling system. Good luck!

I have the Stage 2 Power Kit and it does indeed help with cooling on hot days or track days while waiting in line for the next drag strip run on hot weather
The exhaust burble is very present and very nice but I have only noticed it after installing the BMW Performance Exhaust. |

You need to have the sports package, option 840 or S840, in order for no warranty concerns. Whether or not you need an oil cooler is questionable, because on xis with sports package you don't get an oil cooler unless you also upgrade your wheels to 18". It doesn't mention oil cooler under the requirements, but does mention the higher speed limiter on the bmw accessory website, which comes with the sports package as I understand.

$1600 is a great deal. It will be worthwhile if you live in a very hot climate and/or do track days (road course racing, not drag racing) to reduce temps.

+1 Cooling needs all depend on the intended use. If you are not going to be doing any track days, then the additional "cooling" of the factory performance kit, is absolutely useless, and a total waste of money.
