Good Read on the BMW 1M from WSJ's Dan Neil

I found a good Read on the 1M from WSJ's Dan Neil here:http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...991133766.html

The write-up is funny and engaging but Dan needs to correct some facts:

1) The BMW 1M and the M3 do not have an electronic limited slip. Only the 135i does. A mechanical limited-slip is far superior and it is the performance driving enthusiasts really want.

2) The 1M is not 77 lbs lighter than the 135i. The BMW Owner's Manual lists the 135i at 3,298 lbs. At 3,362 lbs, the 1M is actually 64 lbs heavier than the 135i.

More details on the write-up here:

According to Wikipedia (so it must be true)....

The body on the BMW 1 Series M Coupé has been modified as well, giving the car a significantly wider track and bigger body, as well as a subtle body kit to distinguish it from the standard 1 Series. Despite the car's larger size, it is 77 lb (35 kg) lighter, giving it a weight of 3,296 lb (1,495 kg)

The 1M is lighter.

He states the 1M has a dry sump, any truth to this?

I thought this paragraph was a hoot:

So what could possibly be wrong? Well, for one thing, the 1M Coupe is a total buttaface, one of the ugliest, most disturbingly wrong car designs in modern history. The addition of all the massive wheel arches, lip spoilers, aero mods and the so-called Air Curtain front spoiler helps not at all. This car is the last revenge of former BMW styling head Chris Bangle. Jeez, put a flag over its head and drive for glory.

I laughed. I can see where the styling could be a love it or hate it thing. Kinda like a bulldog puppy. Not pretty, but can't help but love the character of it. I like a car with character. I think I'll love my 1M

I totally disagreed. All these stuff he mentioned made the 1M looks a lot nicer. In fact it makes the 1M look like a different car! I have to admit I do not like the regular 1 series, something is wrong with it's look. When it comes to styling, do not trust someone wearing Crocs lol!

It's good to have Grace AND Pace I think the 1M looks pretty striking.

This morning I told my wife I am naming my 1M: "Buttaface." We both laughed.

The point of a buttaface is the awesome body and dynamics, "but her face..." It kind of sums up the 1M. When you look in comparison to a Z4M Coupe, it is indeed ugly.

I believe that the gearbox is a dry sump system according to the marketing bumf. Perhaps that's what was being referred to.

The writers comment as the 1M being a "Buttaface' reminds me of my past Z3 M Coupe...it was also labeled a "Buttaface" by some but i thought it was the baddest looking car on the planet.

Randy Pobst had whined about the brakes in the "shootout" article in Motortrend (the magazine that awards car/truck of the year based on number of ad pages).

Haha, better known as the Fastest Bread Van in the World! I like the Z3 M Coupe as well but I think that design is a lot more polarizing than the 1M.

From Speedvision as to another opinion of the world's ugliest car ("the single most butt ugly car..."). Too bad the video is so bad.

I got a Beta or S-VHS copy at home I should transfer.
