DCT: Would it have changed your mind?

Coming from the land of VW R32s... manual vs. DSG transmissions is a big topic. For those that have purchased... wondering if you would still have purchased had the 1M been made available with DCT only?

The 2004 R32 was manual only, and the 2008 was DSG only. The 2008s lack of popularity when compared to the 2004 is often largely blamed on the lack of manual option... so the 2012 Golf R is coming to the US in manual only.

So... for those that purchased a 1M, would you still have purchased if it was available in DCT only?

Of course it would have changed my mind: had this car been offered with DCT instead of 6MT it wouldn't have crossed my mind to even consider buying one - I would have kept my previous car or purchased something else.

If DCT was similar or the same to the transmission in the current model m3 I would have opted for it. This is not my weekend race / track car, it is my DD so I actually settled on buying this car dispite the manual only option.

After finally getting my 1M and putting 300 miles on it in 2 days, i can say it's a shame that not everyone can experience the perfect connection of car and driver with the most beautifully shifting gearbox I've ever driven.

I probably would have bought it... although I prefer the manual (coming from DCT). Love to have a manual again! Makes so much more fun.

I think the DCT is a fantastic transmission, although I would not have considered the 1M if that was the only option it came with.

I wouldn't have gotten it either. I would only get DCT/DSG in my DD, but thats only because NY commute is horrible. If i lived anywhere outside of NY or CA i would get Manual for every car. I DD'ed my s2k for 4 years in ny traffic, sick of engaging the clutch every 20 seconds.

I would not have wanted the car with DCT and my wife would not want that either (if she ever got to spend more than a few minutes driving it anyway). We have one vehicle with an automatic and that is one too many for both of us.

Having driven the SMG on track in an E46 M3 several times, it surely can allow a slightly faster lap time, but for the sake of loosing the fun factor of the perfect lap.

No. My fiancee and I are both Manual devotees.

The way things are going, the there may not be any BMW manuals after the F10 series.

If 1M only offered in Automatic, I would not have purchased it.

We also own Auto DCT MKV GTI so I can say, nice auto gearbox but, manual is better for me.

Finally, I saw a review in Car and Driver where they loved the DCT in 2.o Turbo GTI but NOT in R32. They said something to the effect that the engine's powerband does not work well in R32 but that they loved it when paired with 2.0 T.

Anyway, that is beside the point. If 1M was another automatic gadget-mobile, I would have gone elsewhere.

Never would have considered it if only offered in automatic.

I wouldn't say definitely not, but I probably would not have bought one if it was DCT only.
