For those of you who have had your run in service
I've heard a number of owners mention that after their run in service, their cars felt a lot quicker?
A few people have mentioned to me that this could be that some parameters are 'dumbed down' on the ECU during this run in period and then unlocked when the car has it's service. So my question really is, has anyone heard of this? Also, for those of you who have had your cars serviced, does it feel quicker when you get it back? Thanks |

I wondered the same thing when I got my car back from its first service! It did feel faster. Maybe that's because I didn't feel guilty anymore about getting on the gas hard?

I spent the whole time today in the Shop taking pictures of the underside of my car while the service was done. There was no ECU/software work done at all, just fluids and a quick overall check of the car.

Given that prior to the 1200 mile service WOT should not be used and revs should be limited to 5.5k, of course it feels faster afterwards ;-)

Well I just had an interesting conversation with my dealer.
Apparently when they carry out the 1200 mile service, the car gets hooked into the iSys system (whatever that is) which uploads my ECU data to BMW in Munich. Apparently then, BMW Munich apply the "full unlocked ECU" to the car which gives me full power?!?! Yes, you read that right, my car is currently running on a restricted ECU....gulp, I thought it was quick now! That would appear to coincide with the feedback from some members that their cars felt quicker after the running in service. Exciting times!! |

My e92 M3 felt like a different car after the 1200 mile service, engine was much smoother and perky, and strangely, the difference between the EDC settings became much more pronounced too.
1M felt exactly the same though. |

My garage said similar to me after the 1200 mile service, some restrictions had been removed and it should be a bit faster. It didn't feel much different to me as it always felt pretty fast before.

Just spoke to the master technician at BMW Specialist Cars, Stevenage and he informs me that the 1M is indeed detuned when imported into the UK and at the 1200 mile service it is then hooked up and retuned. So no wonder your cars felt far more responsive after the run in service. Could this be to keep it under 225 on the emission rating when first registered?

I know my driving style has changed somewhat but not THAT much I don't think. Very interesting. As you have just got yours, perhaps you could record this too? Hope you're still having fun! Taking advantage of this great weather today I hope! Mark. |

I just had my 1200 mile service yesterday and it definitely feels smoother. Hit a lot of traffic on the 405 so I couldn't test it with the butt dyno. It was however quick enough to get home before we got our first snowfall.

The car runs smoother because of the new fluids. But does it feel faster? I don't know. But what i know is, that i hit full throttle today the first time and the 1M is damn fast. ;-)

i am close to 3k miles now but when i had my service done, It definitely felt different. The gears were changing much more smoothly, the car felt smoother between shifts, and the engine itself felt more "intact" and in "tune" with the throttle...i would venture to say it felt faster as well....

I noticed from new the gearbox was very clucky and it didnt really feel like a short throw box; perhaps just cause it was new and needed breaking in, but after the service the shifts are certainly more smoother. |

Interesting to hear this come from the Master-Tech as Stevenage - I know and trust him, so I'm willing to change my view that this is bull$hit

From this thread, I'm gathering that UK cars are delivered de-tuned and get updated at the run-in service, but probably not US cars. Is that right? |

actually i didn't have my transmission fluid changed during run-in service because the new service bulletin stated not to do it....despite this, I definitely felt a difference after the service...although I am sure that no "tuning" was done

I looked at my invoice and they did download a new code for mine, but it was related to my airbag light that came on during the service...or at least that is what they told me.

there is no hook up to anything at the run in service for any M cars. That is all b.s. I work at a dealer here in Germany and have done the run in service on atleast 30 M cars in the last 5 years. Hooking the car up to the ISTA is only to run the trans pump on the M3/M5. sorry to let a couple of you down on that one.
WOW, it is really unreal what they tell people over there in the States! |
