1,200 Mile Service

Has anyone else had their car say that the engine oil service is past due before 1,200 miles?

I am at 800 miles and looked today, I have the red triangle. My onboard computer is also saying the service is past due. I know when I looked before the estimate was saying the service was due around 1,200 miles.

Is this normal, and should I have the service performed before the 1,200 miles?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I had the same but was advised to just wait until 1200 miles anyway.

They thought the computer may not have been set properly prior to delivery. Not worth doing early I don't think, and given how much importance seems to be placed on the running in service on M cars I would think that 1200 ish looks better than 800 in the service book!

There is a thread on here somewhere that addresses this problem. I believe it was normal and to wait for the 1200 miles, regardless of the time based alert.

The car calculated and triggered sooned.. 1000 thru 1200 was the norm that every one waited till..

Technically it could be done at 800 because the CBS said so... but i guess people just wanted to hit the right number

mine was due at 733 miles....it all depends on how you drive!!! there is nothing wrong with your onboard computer. 1200 is simply a recommendation.

Given the constraints imposed during the running in period, how do you get to drive it so hard that nearly 500 miles are wiped off the service period?

Hi

I've got a query someone might be able to help with. What is the BMW policy for miles to be driven in a customers car during an initial service. Does the technician need to take it out? Mine was serviced yesterday by a UK dealer and had 10 miles put on it!!

I know he took it for a cabbie!! I'm p***ed off and will be having words.

Someone said before the 1,200 mile service is based solely on time. 90 days after the car was built... the BC will say it's time for the service.

That's correct Dackelone!

It has nothing to do with the way you drive and more importantly your advised to take it easy for the 1200 miles.

Mine triggered at 700 miles. BMW for some reason trigger the alert three months from the date or production hence there is no regular pattern between when people are receiving oil change alerts.
Stupid really as this defeats the whole objective of "running in"....
