Anyone running aftermarket oil coolers on the n55?

Anyone running running aftermarket oil cooler on the n55. I was thinking of doing this upgrade since the car hits 250 degrees after 3 back to back passes. And I find the car to run at its best around 200-210 degrees.

How much improvement can be expected from the oil cooler?

haven't really had cooling issues with the N55.
you can look at the ER oil cooler for the n54 should work with the N55.
optional 180F thermostat too.

Your car doesn't hit 250 degrees oil temp when doing a couple runs?

I always assumed that 250 is normal / optimal oil temp for our cars. I'm curios to know how you figured out that 200 gives you more performance???

I never actually noticed a performance decrease as one would expect with the higher oil temps. I can tell you that the BMW is the only car that runs these exceptionally hot oil temps.

All other performance oriented cars target about 190 oil temps with a maximum of 210.

By no surprise oil viscosity is rated at 215.

As long as your not exceeding 250 I would say your fine as operating temp for this car falls in the ~245 range.

I would like to see our oil temps near 200 but you wont see any seat of the pants power in that change alone.

I haven't seen above 250*F. Even on the track, I haven't had issues with it going above street temps by more than a few degrees. Stock oil cooler.

250 is normal for our bimmers, like mention'd above.
my bimmer stays under 250. Stop and go traffic it'll ride at 250.

people do a bottle of water wetter for the coolant.

if you feel weird bout the oil temp being that high.
you can search for oil coolers and thermostat options.

I believe the oil filter housing on this car is slightly different than the N54. You would have to buy an n55 oil filter housing with thermostat, and see if the AR design adaptor block matches up. I havent had a xhance to cross reference part numbers between N54 and 55 yet.

Maybe its because i live in Miami, FL??

But yes, I have ran a couple cars and do notice the difference when the oil temp is higher.

reviving this thread.... so... the oil cooler upgrade (found here) will work in the n55?

I'm removing the fogs and retrofitting the the 335is air ducts for the right wheel well oil cooler option... the Africa hot conditions have returned to N. Florida. It's seriously hot as balls here.

i would look into the ER oil cooler.

the AR one is nice -
it has setrab lines and a fabricated block for the them.
but it has 1 cooler.
unless u want to get another set of lines and another
oil cooler so u can piggy back em 2 get two.

the oem oil cooler has been handle'n well.
just top off ur coolant - bottle of water wetter.
and ur good.

So there arent any that are designed for N55?

why does N55, or 3 series LCI has significant fewer mods available compare to N54?

Newer cars, less development time. That's how it works with every car.

I've seen oil temps of 264 on the track, 100+ degree weather. So far I haven't felt a need to have an aftermarket oil cooler but will consider the ER dual cooler in the future. I've contacted them in the past before and they confirmed that it will work on the N55.

It's an option with the JB4 tune. It kicks on the radiator fan to high to cool the car down some. Meant to bring temps back down a little between runs. In my experience tho it doesn't help much when using it and actively driving the car. Mine still hits 250 degrees even running this mode. It does help cool it down faster when I park it and let it sit at idle running this mode which I think it was made for.
