HID self leveling test

I have a 2011 328i coupe and I'm wondering if the hids are suppose to always do the self leveling test when you turn them on. Before I would notice that they start low and move up, but now they don't seem to do that anymore.

Do your hids always move when you turn them on the first time?

Mine do it whenever the lights are on when i start the car. If I start the car and then turn on the lights, I don't get the test.

Although I've seen mine adjust before when the engine was already running, I will have to try that tomorrow night.

i believe they self check when the car is turned on, not when the headlights are turned on.

Always on startup. Only noticeable if the lights are on.

Thanks for the input everyone. I haven't tested this yet but maybe I stopped seeing the level check because I started to turn on the lights after I let the engine briefly warm up for a few seconds. They must (hope) be doing the check during that time.
