Anyone got a CCTV system?

Does anyone use any sort of CCTV to protect their property / BMW. I’ve been toying with the idea for some time but don’t really know which way to go. I’m not particularly expert when it comes to computers but have a basic understanding and from my limited research I’m thinking IP cameras look like a good system.

Is anyone else out there running a system like this? I don’t want to spend a small fortune and I’ve seen outdoor cameras for about £150 but I just don’t know if that is good enough or if you need to be spending more. I like the idea of something that’s easy to install and manage via a smart phone or laptop. I’m not looking to turn my property into fort knox but want to do enough to deter any potential threats.

The thing that has made me re-think this is that the Mrs had a visit from the Police yesterday investigating dodgy tradesmen. They had recovered a note book which had my wife’s name, address and mobile number in it. It probably dates back to when the wife was ringing round for quotes to get the drive cleaned earlier in the year. While they were there the police also noticed a leaflet in the porch which had arrived the day before. It was advertising one of the companies that does facia boards, guttering, etc and the police mentioned that it was one of the companies they are investigating and not to use them. The police advised that you should do plenty of research before employing anyone which I would normally do anyway. It’s probably nothing to worry about but it makes you think doesn’t it, if they are involved in any sort of criminal activity then what if they had seen the 335d on the drive and were planning on coming back to break into the house. Anyway, I’m thinking that a security camera may just be enough of a deterrent to make the difference.

Any thoughts?

Nah I do t do dogs, I think the fact I have a diesel estate is bad enough without having to put a Labrador in the back, plus it would end up pinned to the back window once the 335 power was un-leased.

You wanna have a word with Will; it's his specialality .

I'm keen on sorting out some sort of surveillance, since a milk bottle landed on the back seat of my RX8 (the doors were locked at the time ), always wondered if the next door neighbours mates were involved .

If you really don't need a CCTV system then don't bother. We had one installed at our old property and it just makes you paranoid. You end up flicking over the TV channel to scan the cameras at every figgin bump or bang, then you start to watch random recordings from 3/4am it can really freak you out if you think you saw something!

The problem is that it's the fact I'm paronoid that makes me want the system. Some of the new wireless ones operate via a web browser and only email notify you if there is movement in a pre determined zone which you have set, i.e. next to the car, around your front door, etc.
Has anyone got a system like this?

Yes, an Axis System, bought from Maplins. Works pretty well - I only tend to access it from overseas to see if the cars are where we left them but I don't really know what I'd do if I found they weren't.

In my opinion. Cow boy builders are Into ripping people off not stealing cars.
A nice car just indicates by how much they will rip you off by.

Get surveillance if you want it definitely but Its car thrives that want cars and not dodgy builders.

My brother has some type of IP camera that plugs into the router.

It emails him pictures if the sensor is triggered and records video to a card. - he only got it because his house was unoccupied all week whilst he worked in london.

I think if you lived in it full time unless you are super minted with high value possessions i don't really see the need.

Sadly I'm not super minted. And you are probably right that the cow boy builders aren't after my car but you never know who is.
I do occasionally work away so I think it would put the wife's mind at rest a bit.
Suspect I'm just over paranoid.
