painting rotors & calipers

Ok guys, I need to paint my rotors b/c they are starting to rust and it looks pretty bad with my nice wheels. What's the best way to do this? I've never done this before b/c I always considered it ricer-ish. I picked up some 900* silver brake paint at Autozone. I did one center rotor today on the car and the color is awsome but it's too dang hard and not perfect enough. I think I have to pull the rotors. But what about the calipers? That just looks like a nightmare.

It is easy. Take off wheel , mask disk with blue tape, hit it with spray paint. I did all four in about two hours, including a lot of rust removal.. I did have a tiny bit of overspray, but I just went through a bedding process for the brakes and it seems to have eliminated any residue. Don't over think this process.

Gotcha. That's the conclusion I came up with. I'm not doing the calipers. Just the disc hub area. My problem today was my tools. Floor jack sucks, and my jack stands are too damn tall/big. So I was having to do one wheel at a time. Today was my last straw with working on my cars with the old truck stuff.

Hi there,

I have the same issue after changing my rotors with aftermarket ones..it sucks. Rotors are ok but I never had any rust issue on my center hubs with my OEM ones till I replaced them. What was the overcome after you did this on yours rims. Did it work? Can you guide what to buy and how to do it? I only have this issue with my front hubs. Thanks!

Hi,

I have used a product in the past for rusty metal and I have to say it has held up well (non-BMW, non-caliper application). It is POR-15 and it is available in a few colors, including silver.

I believe it can be brushed-on and when I did it that way, I found it to flow well and produce good cosmetic results. The big advantage is that you have no overspray to deal with and you don't have to remove the rust.

Regards.

Great tip! I will have to do this. Where did you buy the POR-15? Thanks!

Hi,

I think I bought it directly from them. URL is POR-15.com, I believe (please do a search as I may be remembering incorrectly).

Regards.

Hi,

No, I have not used it on my BMW's. I have, however, used it quite a bit on my restoration project, my Austin Healey 3000.

Regards.
