The search for a replacement has come down to 2 cars

...either a 535d M sport or a Mk5 Golf GTi DSG.

Which would you choose and why?

I've been deliberating for months and after reading various forums and speaking to people in the trade, my original idea of a Mini Cooper S is off the boil now.

I've owned a GTi before and absolutely loved it to bits. My brother had a 535d for a couple of years - of which I used it quite often.

Both cars are very different, I know, but they will both give me the comfort I want and the driving experience. Fuel consumption will be even. They both ride well and are very durable. I fancy a auto now and both cars can provide that within budget (standard in BMW) and both can be bought well equipped.

535d is great car but in even M-sport guise it cannot cheat physics by hiding its bulk like the M5 can. If you enjoy a twisty lane or two then have a GTI

those are two very different ends of the spectrums in terms of types of cars......if you want to drive, and have nice handling, more fun id say gti.....if you want comfort, refined car, luxury, balllin look, or more space and still have a nice motor thent he 5 series.....but its not really a cut and dry decision.

Golf for me, having driven both, more pleasure to be had more frequently out of the pokey 2.0 t than the albiet clever but a little boring 535d engine.

Would have though it depends more on your need for the extra space though?

If you talking E6# 5 series I'd take a long look at one. We have a touring as a company car and although it's a 520d and not a 535 It still has the same interior, which looks and feels very dated IMO ( no offence to any owners)

The heater controls are out of the stone age and feel very cheap. There is no digital climate read out, instead all you have is a heat control knob with the temp marks printed around the edges. There is no duel zone mode either. As already mentioned, they are a heavy lump and not the sort of car you’d want to take for a run, just for the hell of it.

The ride on ours, even with 19” run flats is superb though as to are the low cabin noise levels.

I'd have the Golf all day long

All 535d had a more sophisticated climate control than creepycoupe has on his 520d.

If you want a 535d go for the post facelift type with the different transmission and door cards. Apparently the fuel economy is substantially better than earlier cars.

I test drove one recently, but felt it was overloaded with technology (HUD, Lane Deprature Warning System blah blah blah.........) Quick, but a manual 530d post facelift is what I'm looking for.

Are you talking about the current (F10) 535d?

If you go for the Golf, definitely map it. Makes a quick car very quick indeed, mine felt almost diesel like torquewise.

I've just realised that the two cars I've spent most of my miles in (ever) are my Golf GTI ED30 and 335d. How about that for almost perfect relevance to the OP?

I can't comment on the 5 as I only test drove one, but the 335 was nice enough to plod up and down the motorway in. I think the Golf does do comfort very well and the 3 series is definitely no better, even if the 5 series might be.

I suppose it comes down to what you want. I love the Golf because when I DO get on decent roads, it's a lot more fun - meanwhile on the motorway it's very comfortable and pleasant as well.

I think OP needs to clarify if it is an F10 535d or the older model. Also there must be 1 metre difference in length of the car..... so this is really a personal choice decision about how big a car is enough....

It's obviously going to be the E60-variant otherwise there's not only a completely different beast of a car to consider but also the small matter of around £30k .

Yes, sorry chaps, it's the E60 Saloon.

Space isn't really an issue - so as long as it has the relevant access for a family day out. We always take my car on a long run and the wife's on shorter journeys.

When i first bought my Mk5 - it was one of the cheapest in the Country at the time - but it was also very basic in terms of Spec. If there's one regret I had with that car is that I should have held off (or invested a little more) for one with leather/xenons/DSG. They're as cheap as chips now and I just fancy another with better spec.

Both cars would suit my daily needs for what I use my car for. I've just done 30k miles in 20 months - which both cars are very capable of. The other reason why I've chose these two is for the future residuals. I'm HOPING their depreciation has now levelled off for at least a couple of more years.

Both will get a re-map - the Gold will get a few more mods. Performance wise, I can't imagine the 535d being THAT much quicker.

I think the BMW looks better, and coming from a 3 series is like an upgrade, the Golf is not really an Upgrade but a sideways move from the 3er. If you look 18 go for the Golf.

Both cracking cars agreed.

What is the cheapest you could get a decent mileage Mk 5 Gti DSG for?

Asking as I may need to get a lil hot hatch for a while and am weighing up a Mk 4 and Mk 5 GTi....in all honesty I dont want either but dont fancy splashing out big bucks on another motor just yet.
