Train Horns - Network Rail Policy?

Short of calling them i'm not sure how to find this out

I'm trying to move house and one house that is top of our list is not that far from a railway line.

The trains are speed limited because there are a lot of crossing and 2 stations close by so we don't actually hear the trains but we hear their horns.

From what we understand, they have to beep 2 or 3 times because of the crossing as someone people lost their lives there. We can hear the horns.

But we did have some interesting news, that they will be building a footbridge over the track in the next year.

I wondered about 2 points, if this would mean they wouldn't beep their horn anymore if that is their policy? And because of the bridge would the trains be de-stricted again and louder?

Cheers

do you mean a level-crossing or a footpath crossing? Is this on the WCML 'cos I know a driver and I'll ask him. I suspect if there is a "W" (whistle - how quaint) sign then it will probably stay regardless of the bridge.

Thank you

Yes this is the WCML - i believe they are foot crossing which are being closed in favour of a foot bridge in an area called Stone.

If the whistle stays or the train gets faster it does help us clarify on our intended move

OK I'll ask. Is the current foot crossing unmanned or connected with a station?

If there is any crossing's in the area then there will be whistle boards and nothing you can do to stop them. Be aware of any engineering work which may come up and may ruin your weekends. All night working. Machines up and down etc.

Just bare it in mind.

Yes good point, its definitely one to think seriously about. It's not right on the track but you might get associated noise.

I don't think the crossing is connected to a station even though it is probably only about 600 yards north as you leave stone station.

Thanks again

Briers,

I get caught at the Barlaston barriered level crossing in the mornings sometimes, believe me the intercities comes through there at 70 or more full-bore horns blaring, before 6 am, right next to houses etc, scares the crap out of me waiting in the van - nodding off

We've just moved to outside Eccleshall, about a mile from the track, and we can hear the trains at speed, no horns though. Long rumbling freight trains at night wake me up sometimes, seem to take forever to pass....

Stone is really nice, it's a railway town, the place is built round the railway, so you'll not be on your own!

Must update my location......

I stayed near a railway once - literally at the bottom of the small garden, and this was the ECML which had noisy diesels and HSTs. Even so, after a day or two you don't notice it. And Stone is a nice town.

My parents have a house in barlaston and i know what you mean about the barlaston crossing. I walk the dog up there sometimes to the downs.

The house in stone is near stone station and so far I've only ever seen them going slow and you barely hear them but there might be some that pelt through too.

My cousins live the other end of stone in these old converted bungalows and its VERY noisy at full pelt.

Hope the move went ok for you, heard last year you were moving back from manchester.

Eccleshall is a lovely place to be. We were considering yarnfield too but we are only moving for schools, catchment areas and all.

We stayed in a hotel in ibiza once which was right under the main flight path, as if you could almost touch the airplane.

After a day we didn't notice it either.

All settled in ta.

Eccleshall is great, lovely old market town - and SEVEN great pubs!! - Real Ale Heaven!

The station and central end of Stone is the nicest bit IMO, I often work at ABB on the Oulton Road.

We looked at Stone, but in the end went more 'rural', but the missus shops in Stone now (at Morrisons!)

Yeh, our first house in Manc had the elevated airport line 5 doors down at the end of the street, as said, you soon just stop noticing it.

Even the slight jangling of glasses in the cupboard becomes 'normal'

Years ago when my Old Man was a steam engine driver and we lived in London. He used to blow off his whistle passing our house to let my mum know he was nearly home, so she could get his dinner on.

So my point is, just because there's no foot crossing, it don't guarantee peace and quiet, well not if you get a driver like my Old Man.

LOL - Small world - I lived in Gnosall since from 4 to 25, grew up playing in the fields and lanes round there.

Know Ranton very well - many a mis-spent night at the Cleaver, trying a bit of cow tipping walking home in the dark!

Re the Bell - Indeed it is good - in there last Friday night, the George is good when the fire's raging too.

It is a small world! The cleaver is open again now.

Think I will be in the bell on Saturday night will be my first night out since the little one arrived 20 weeks ago

The in-laws live in Ranton and my mum lives in cotton clanford which is where I grew up, its a great area to live.

Think we have a curry from Daru chini at least once a week!!
