Quoted Luggage Capacity Confusion

This has been confusing me for some time now but never got to the bottom of it. I've been researching a load of different cars to find a suitable replacement for the X3 and the quoted luggage capacity does confuse me - do anyone know the ins and outs???

For instance, the old 5 series touring, quotes capacity of 500 (1650 with seats down) whereas the Qashqai+2 quotes 450 (1520). I've not seen them side-by-side but is the touring actually better than the 'truck' - I appreciate the Nissan has 2 foldaway seats in the back that does take up space. Perhaps not the best comparison to make.

The Volvo V60 claims 557 (1241) and the Freelander claims 755 (1650).

My wifes X3 claims 480 (1560) but fail to see how the Freelander has another 275 litres of space. My neighbour has one but it doesn't seem much bigger at all but admittedly it is wider so perhaps it's deceptive.

Are there different measuring 'standards' that are used or is it simply that some are more deceptive with their space than others???

Any ideas or am I just being too critical of potential replacements???

I think it measures up to the seat level so therefore something that is wider or longer from rear of seats to tailgate will gain space.

Under floor compartments may therefore also increase the capacity even if they are mainly worthless.

Would imagine all manufacturers have their own methods of measuring. An X3 actually has a really decent size boot and is often bigger than bigger cars such as the X5. X5 has a much higher boot floor therefore considerably less space.

This is the sort of 'lingo' being used in the Accord Touring brochure, 'VDA' method is mentioned, also 'to window' and 'to roof' mentioned, now if other brochures aren't so specific how do you know what their measures mean (bar trotting down with 2,000 bog-rolls and seeing how many will fit .

* Trunk capacity - rear seat up (litres, VDA method)
* Trunk capacity - rear seat down load to window (litres, VDA method)
* Maximum trunk capacity - rear seat down load to roof (litres, VDA method)

This is what keeps making my decision swing between 'truck' and 'estate'.

Go "truck" ........ you will really miss an X3 type vehicle if you go to an estate car, much less versatile for a young family. We went from a CRV to an E91, wife only lasted 6 montha in it before we got the X3 and I inherited the E91. Much less boot space in the E91 and a lot harder to lift kids in and out of car seats.
