The boring explanation is link spam

Some one for a laugh takes the keyword phrase "What defines an English person" and submits that phrase with the Wikipedia URL for the definition of c**t... Probably to a bunch of directories or blog comments.

They spend about 50 quid max and google eventually finds these links with that phrase, visits the URL, associates the content of the page URL, wiki entry for c**t with that phrase.

Once the association is made, when typed in google it didplays the wiki entry at number 1.

Thansk Briers

i had an idea it was something to do with getting lots of links out there but wondered if it was a group of people working together doing it manually for a challenge.

Probably was done manually.

One of our competitors did a blog article a few years back about how they were the number 1 result for "the best web design agency in the universe". We latched onto it and within a week bumped them from the top slot without ever spending a single penny. Very amusing that their own blog post directed clients to our site.
