It's only going to get worse I'm afraid. The gap will get bigger over time.

Surely a fuel efficient (40mpg+) petrol is the way forward these days over a diesel? You also get a nicer sound, a bigger rev range and you can buy fuel from as 'little' (said very much tongue in cheek) as 128.9ppl.

What would I know anyway, I haven't seen the upside of 20mpg for a few years now!

But, if I was looking for economy, I'd be looking at one of BMW's new 4-pot turbo's, Fiat Groups' multi-airs, VW's 1.4's turbos (up-to 180hp from these....I'm sure we'll see 200hp from a factory-spec 1.4 soon) etc etc. instead of a diesel. In the meantime I'll struggle along with my £90 fill-ups every 300 miles (I don't even use premium fuel in the Jag!).

Yep, the new 328 will be filling this specific gap!

My thoughts exactly. I'm looking around for something for Mrs. rich1068 and added to the fact you can't get a diesel without a DPF, petrol seems to be the way forward.

Is it now just as good as standard diesel?

Might be worth using red with some of that millers stuff if it's not going to harm the engine. I worked out that if I got away with using it for 6 months then it would effectively cover the cost of the fine and any saving after would be in my pocket.

Is red diesel not just diesel coloured red to identify it as cheap tax/tax exempt fuel?

The testers turned up at my old place of work to test all diesels in the car park.

It's a lot more common than you think.

Currently, petrol is c1.29ppl - V power petrol c1.35ppl - diesel c1.40ppl and diesel ultimate c 1.45ppl.

There's a very valid argument against big diesel engines at the moment, in favour of 4 pot turbo charged engines. It's my current argument for the Golf GTi over the 535d.

Yes a bit like few years back where some people thought "sod it" and bought the more powerful petrol anyway. Why not "sod it" and buy the big powerful diesel mate!!??

Upto you!!

I think out of the golf/535 I would go Bimmer myself!!

were just getting ripped off on diesel, in france its considerably cheaper than petrol and they dont pay road tax and they mot every 2 years, and they have fantastic smooth roads. thats another thing has anyone ever done a study on the benefits to economy on smooth road surfaces to the rough rutted ones we have to suffer in the uk? Rip off britain strikes again
