Heads up for those with USB audio
Just bought a couple of these. 32GB and a bit of a bargain. I lost my tiny Verbatim micro thing (because it was so tiny!) and needed a replacement. The reviews are mixed but it's perfect for storing music to be played in the car.

I've ended up using my iPod in the USB so that I get the album art without having to embed it in every track. Great price though for 32GB

I'm trying something similar to this. I have a 1T hard drive that's USB powered. I know it's more than I'll ever need but I got it for a steal and it's no bigger than my iPhone 4s. Since my friend is a dj. Filling it up woul be no problem. My question is would it work with the USB? On my last car I had it formatted to work. I haven't tried it on the BMW because I don't have the hard drive as it's getting updated

I'm just copying my entire iTunes music folder over so album art is already there but I'd be interested to try this with my iPhone.

I always use mi iPod or iPhone with the y cable, how does a normal usb work through idrive? Do you get the same level of control as you do with the iPods etc?
Also do you copy the iTunes folder as a whole file or individual tracks? |

I just plug the USB into the armrest port and everything shows up via CD/Multimedia on iDrive. Just go to External Devices and choose the Verbatim/whatever. Control is extensive, I can't see it being any less than with an iPod/iPhone. All folders are listed alphabetically, in my case from Adele to Zero 7. Once you choose an artist/album it plays displaying the album art etc with the option to go back/forward, search etc.
Go to the Apple folder on your HDD and then to the Music folder. Copy/paste all the artist folders in there to the USB. Further to Boyd1963's comment about album art, I've found everything sourced from the iTunes store will have album art embedded for each track. Most stuff from Amazon MP3 store too. Music 'acquired' from elsewhere seems to be mostly complete (they're fussy these pirates) but albums ripped from CDs with iTunes for some reason doesn't. Or not completely. Then it's just a case of nabbing the art from Amazon and copy/pasting it into the 'Get info' file properties in iTunes. As I add more stuff to iTunes I just remove the USB from the car and add the new folders. |

I think thatmy problem is that almost all of my music was ripped from CDs. It's a shame that there is no way of accessing Napster downloaded albums. I have recently signed up for a monthly subscription and love it.

I've moved to Kingston R500 32 GB USB DataTraveller. Its one of the high speed ones which means indexing and searching works very well. Now just case of setting up all the playlists. IPOD would have been a good idea but with no idrive it be a pain on small screen

If it helps the Kingston sticks fit perfectly with no cable, also worth remembering that any extension lead you get and one does come with the USB kit should be very short. The longer it gets the more current the device needs to draw and you will have problems.
Recently had couple of sticks I had music for long trip and one would not fit without adapter. However the lead was about 8" and with it it was hit and miss if the stick would work( long lead caused too much current drop) but if plugged direct to the port it was fine. Very odd. I even tried couple of leads same result. So best to get short stick to ensure best performance.
