E class 350 CDI Vs 335D

Has anyone test driven similar spec models of both of these?

I love the 335D but it just doesn't excite me anymore. It feels too smooth, like it isn't making any effort? (if that makes sense?)

I really like the styling of the E class Coupe but not sure about the difference in power.

If the 335d Does not excite you anymore, I can't see a less powerful, slower diesel being more exciting. Buy an M3!!

if you get an m3 youll certainly have lots more fun filling it with fuel! i yearned for the sound of a good exhaust and bought a petrol engined car although a bmw and even though i love taking it out for a back road blast now and then i get back in the 335d and love every mile of it. its a fantastic car that does everything and economically to boot. i looked at a merc but engine wise they cant hold a candle to the bmw although the interiors are superb, all in all they are a bit glitzy.

i think the 250 is twin turbo now is 228bhp 4 pot, but the 350 is 6pot and pushing 260+ easy as my brother in law has a e350 sport and i cant keep up with him 0-100 in my 530d, i must say they look much sporter inside than the bm

If you want excitement, then a MB definitely isn't your car...unless you're talking about an AMG model. I've driven the E350 saloon and it's a very capable car - great auto 'box, beautiful interior etc.

Why not change for a Manual 335i ?

I've got a CLS350 CDI 265bhp now, I had a 335d in the past. The engine in the Merc feels far more detached, it's very quiet and does not really rev at all, moves quickly without any fuss but it makes for a boring drive. The paddle shifts are useless too as most of the time it ignores what you select because it thinks it knows best. For driver enjoyment don't get the Merc!

I'm also disappointed with the mpg. It's claimed to do 47mpg on the combined cycle but I struggle to get mid 30's and that's without pushing the car hard.

I too have owned both. The 335d is certainly the drivers car, while the merc is nice, it never quite filled the shoes of the 335d.

There are two things which made me get rid of the merc sharpish.

Firstly, Depreciation on the e350cdi is huge. In 18 months, I lost 11K on a 335d E91 On the Merc, in 15 months, I'd lost 17K.

Servicing the merc is horribly expensive.

The BMW cost me about 600 to service over 15K miles

The merc cost me 900 over a similar mileage, plus an extra 450 on rear tyres.

The merc gearbox is also very lethargic. There are many threads on the merc forums and despite many attempts to resolve it, I dont believe they have yet been successful.

Both are nice cars, but the difference between the two 3litre 6pot diesels did surprise a little.

I replaced my 335D with a C350 CDI (the 265bhp version) 3 months ago.

Whilst the Mercedes is better than the BMW on many fronts, excitement isn't one of them. If you think the BMW feels like it isn't making an effort, the Mercedes takes this to a whole new level.

Don't get me wrong, the Mercedes is just as quick as the BMW (both do 60mph in just over 6 seconds) but like the 335D engine, there is no drama with it and the BMW is still more of a drivers car.

wow, i am quite shocked about the negative feedback on the Merc auto box and engine...

Just shows the stats are only half the story!

Been there before haven't we... It is not as quick as a 335d.

Sounds to me like a diesel will never do it for you whether it's mapped or not. The low revving nature of diesels mean they tend to never feel like they are making any effort, to some that is the attraction.
