Okay I will probably get flamed for it, but having my 2009 335i for almost 3 years it provides some of the stupidest directions you can think of.

Plus I've tried shortest, fastest etc settings and it always gives bad directions about 80% of the time. For example, when I was leaving a hospital account in Ashland, KY it wanted to add an additional 120 miles of drive back home...WTF.

Good thing I have my Google navi on my cell phone.

This I-drive is a godsend compared to the pre 2007 versions!!

One thing I've noticed is that Germans have always been behind when it comes to computer layouts / navi systems and car computers in cars. They are always senselessly over engineered and over complicated; then when you do figure them out, they don't work all that well.

BMW needs to take some advice from Hyundai / Honda / Toyota / Lexus in that department where everything is simple and works flawlessly.

The cars may drive great but inconveniences like this make you want to sell the car when a guy in a Toyota Camry can find his place and you can't.

glad i'm not the only one. on my other company car i use my garmin widescreen with traffic and it works so nice.

BTW: anyone know when using BMW NAvi, how do you find out turn by turn to see where it's at? Only way for myself now is zooming out on map and seeing it.

You could always turn on split screen and change the split screen display to arrow directions. That'll show you the next turn coming up, but I don't know how to display more than that.

that's what i do now, but would like to see start to finish turn by turns, because BMW Nav will always route me to some stupid direction.

sadly it's become just a cool map display only

I have a 2011 328xi with Navigation - car is 3 weeks old with current maps. Although, so far, I haven't had many "bad" directions although in one cause stragely routed, I find I must agree with comments.
Previously, I had used a cheap Garmin and it was much, much better than the BMW system. The BMW system seems very behind the times in features and detail. Starting with items such as a day and night mode for the prospective view but not automatically switching between them as my cheap garmin did.
The BWM unit doesn't show what route your on unless you come across the street / number as it moves by. It doesn't show what the next highway exit is. etc. I was in downtown Hartford, CT yesterday and it didn't even show the name of most of the surrounding streets no matter the setting. Even when navigating it gives a turn right in "700 feet" then a turn right. Most modern systems give more detail notice and even a moving arrow showing how close.
I hate to be so negative but this system is really disappointing. However, I had an early X5 with navigation and that system couldn't even keep up with the location when on the highway.

Go to the Route Information display. That'll show you each direction change and I believe let you select a detour at any point (can't remember that for sure and I'm not in front of my car atm).

My 2009 Nav works great. Never had any problems. Better than any aftermarket I used before.

My Garmin Nuvi is flawless, I move it between vehicles, and was $200 refurb'ed from Amazon. I can't see ever buying nav built into a vehicle and throwing that money away when I sell it.

Never had problems with mine and I use it fairly often to navigate through side streets to avoid main roads during rush hour (without setting a destination, though). My semi old (3 years with updated firmware/maps after it started crashing all the time. Yay warranty) Garmin Nuvi constantly would tell me my destination is on the left when it was on the right (and vice versa).

I kind of agree with the navigation aspect. Mine gave me some crazy, round about direction the other day, but I looked at the map and saw I just had to turn left and I would be at the destination much faster. However, it is more than just a navigation system, though. I like how it integrates all the entertainment options on the car as well. While the Garmin/Tom Tom, etc. units may be better for navigating, they can't offer the extra features.

I’ve currently own BMW and Lexus with nav systems and I can tell you that both systems can and do get confused. Sometimes I swear those systems were developed by a New York taxi cab driver.
I have had both systems tell me to do one thing when in fact I had to ignore them and just continue my current route. Since I do not have a Garmin or Tom Tom, I always check google maps or my phone nav before traveling in unfamiliar areas.
Don’t get me wrong, both BMW and Lexus systems work very well 99% of the time. However, that 1% can really screw you up and take you out of your way if you follow the computer and not your instincts.

for some of you that worked well, how far was your distance? i use it when i travel over 100 miles or more in county routes and roads and that's when it has it's problems. not on the interstate where it does work better.

IMHO, Garmin is the absolute best so I have no idea why these companies don't outsource the navigation systems and maps to them. Create a different menu structure that is fitting to your car but have the overall system run by Garmin because not a single auto manufacturer can seem to get it right.

I usually double check the routes with google map, but thats just a habit of mine...I usually check google map routes too to make sure I'm okay with the general directions.
