Dilemma........

This:

or this:

Pictures are not of the actual cars in question. First is a TT 2.0 TFSI Black Edition with Nav and AMI, heated seats in Ibis white. The second is an MY12 A5 Coupe 1.8 TFSI Black Edition, Phanton Black and cruise. Both brand new, great deals on both.

Before you dismiss the 1.8 Turbo FSI, it's the new engine - 170bhp, 320nm peak torque, 134 gm/km and performance/economy figures not a million miles from 2.o TSFI Quattro and the TDI.

A5. It might just be me, but the TT is a little feminine for my liking.

In that colour with those wheels the A5 is a great looking car.

It's a big heavy beast to be lugged around with a 1.8 with 170bhp though.

I just can't see a man driving a TT.

I'd go and have a look at the C class coupe, looks much nicer than the A5.

Peter, first off I assume you have been on to the dealers today and kept them late in the office on new years eve and hence beat them into submission on the cheapest price.

The TT, take this in the right context but with your history it will be gone within 6 to 9 months max. You will tire of the bling look, the ride quality will be rubbish and you once the novelty wears off you will be looking for something a 'bit more grown up'.

My initial thoughts on the A5 were that looks the right one and then I looked at the engine and thought ummm.......

So I have been on the Audi website which is rubbish and tried to find the technical spec which tells you nothing. Peter, don't worry I then found a link to download a brochure and now I have seen all the details and I am pleasantly surprised.

As you say it has loads of torque and if the midrange is like my JCW you should be able to make decent progress without having to rev the nuts out of it. I was going to say....... have they a 170 tdi and then I looked at the price difference and they want £2,200 more for the smelly one.

So therefore you get the A5 you want (which is far more you imo.) in the top spec look with a reasonably mixture of performance and economy. There is a minimal chance that even you make keep this for 12 to 18 months and lets be honest that will be a result in itself.

So Q1 is it a better car than your 1 series - YES
Is it a better car for you than the TT - YES

I would say for you mate A5 all the way. Go buy and leave the salesmen alone to sell to customers they will make some money out of.

I have William, they are ok, but I have to say I prefer the A5 over them. He C220/250 diesels are quite noisy and I wouldn't have a C Class coupe petrol.

top assessment of my predicament Peter. Thanks for taking the trouble of downloading the A5 brochure . The 1.8 engine does look great and why pay more. I am a tightfisted petrol head after all !

I am drawn to the TT, but white isn't me and I suspect I would tire of it. The A5 spec with B&O sound, Bluetooth, DAB, 19"s, full leather, is a real draw, as well as the full MMI and superb Audi interior.

EDIT: iPad is a nightmare for spilling errors and crop predictive text.

A5 looks far superior, that's the one I would go for.
