DIY - LED License Plate Light

First... credit goes to RikuE90 for the Idea.. and one picture from his DIY.. since, i no longer have the unmodified Plate light housing.

and the difference between my DIY and RikuE90 is that my DIY does not require extra resistor to be solder on. The only modification need is modify the plate light housing.

Same as all DIY goes, use at ur own risk... i am not responsible for ur car.... and ur attempt....

and best of all.. it STAYS ON... AND NO ERROR MESSAGE..

I have E92.. and I am not sure if E90 has the same size plate light housing.

To remove the housing...

Insert flat screwdriver into the hole to the left of the plastic lens.....push to the right & pull the housing down.

Then just pull off the plugs.

this picture is taken from RikuE90 DIY instruction..... ignore the red and blue wire.

basically, the place that i circle in red need to be complete removed.

by using the diagonal plier carefully cut away as much as you can.

after you remove as much as you can, use the drill with grinder, carefully sand away any part of the plastic that still sticks out.

here is the finish product...

THE CRITICAL PART IS THAT YOU NEED TO TAKE TIME AND SAND AWAY ANY PLASTIC PART THAT STILL STICK OUT AFTER YOU CUT WITH PLIER.

THE LUXER 1 - 12 LED IS A PERFECT SIZE, NO EXTRA TO WIGGLE... IF YOU STILL HAVE EXTRA PLASTIC THAT STILL STICKS OUT THE LUXER 1 WILL NOT FIT IN PERFECTLY.

take that LUXER 1 LED AND CAREFULLY INSERT IT INTO THE HOUSING.....

TAKE UR TIME.. IT WILL FIT... SLIDE LED INTO THE CUT PART OF THE HOUSING FIRST.. .. THERE IS A GOOD Chance you will need to move the part that i circle in red.. up a bit to slide the other end of the led into the housing..

Shinchan,

Nice DIY, thanks.

Does the kit include 2 sets, or do you order 2 ?

I tried the mtec guy "mtecpower" on eBay and he does not have any listed. I'll have to look elsewhere...

I see they make an LED 24 product that comes with 2 LED 12 boards. Does anyone know if this is the same as 2 separate LED12's. I am wondering if it comes with twice the number of bulb sockets. Seems like the best kit for the license mod, and it is a lot cheaper than 2 LED12s.

Also, checked the bavauto LED12 pricing and it is a little cheaper than ebay. $18 vs. $20.

i order another 2 sets OF 24 led from Bavauto.

For those of you who decide to order from BAVAUTO... that 24 LED is actually 2 12 LED board. and it comes with only 1 37mm festoon connector.. which means.. you are still out of luck on getting the plate light running....

plate light needs 2 37mm festoon.

if you guys can hold on.. for a day or 2... my order should arrive tomorrow. and I can also try those 12 led out in interior center console.. since.. it comes with various adapter.. including 168 base.... so that 1 12 led can use in plate.. and 1 can use in the center console...

so if you get 2 sets of 24 leds.. hopefully it works out for both 2 PLATE LIGHT AND 2 INTERIOR CENTER CONSOLE......

alright, got good news and bad news..... for 24 LED from Bavauto...

24 LED is 2 X 12 LED panel. only 1 set of adapter for various socket.

Bad news...

the 2 X 12 Leds can only be daisy chain together... meaning one of the LED panel has a right socket connection the the adapter.. the second panel can only be relay to the first one....

Good news...

the 24 LED can be use in center console.. create a super bright 24 LED light.. that could blind ur eyes...

see this thread for picture..

Bavauto confirmed the LED's are Luxer1 and that LED24 has only one set of sockets, so 2 LED12's are needed for LP.
