X5 sd Msport

Im going sensible, well half sensible. Porsche, ED30 and GTTDI are going to be replaced by one car, as above. Obviously I've had this engine in 335's, but what's it like in the X5, and any thoughts or comments on the car in general?

Oh and I'll be looking at 2009/2010 cars

...his is fully loaded apparently and quite new so might push it beyond budget, especially with the newer engine, but always worth a cheeky chat .

If I was going for the 40d I'd go for new, as I have direct terms with BMW with a nice big discount, but to be fair a 2009/10 will still be £10k or so cheaper, and do the same job. As long as it has warranty, and is fully loaded, I'll be happy.

I'm your man Oli, I have a 3.0sd M Sport, 2008 model and also an E92 335d so its easy to compare.

The X5 is a great vehicle, plenty of power but feels quite a bit slower than the E92 due to weight. Economy nothing special but if you gives it a few revs or keep the box in sport then it does shift well for its size.
Brilliant all rounder, the M Sports look really good. 20" wheels a must although they can cause chipping on the rear doors, rear arches and back part of side sills. BMW can be forced to repair this under warranty and also fit a clear 3M plastic cover, does solve the problem. New carsnow may be coming with the protection but 09/10 won't have it from factory.

Newer 40d is only very slightly faster, thinks its another 8bhp IIRC but the 8 speed auto box came in at that time which is silky smooth but not worth paying a lot more for.

Get plenty of toys, I looked for ages when I got mine as my previous X5 has almost everything and wanted the same again with low miles.

I'd disagree about the gearbox. The only thing i hated about my 335D was the gearbox. The 8 speed is much smoother and if they put it in the 335D they've got a winner

It's a heavy beast. Not good on diesel. I get about 5mpg less than i did with my 335D.

But it is an amazing car. In my spec at least. But i just don't use it enough to justify keeping it, and remember i have a fast datsun too!
Saying that i have a trip to John O Groats planned for Feb and will be doing 3 peaks challenge in Spring/Summer and i'll be taking the X5 (if i still have it)

Here's an old ad for my car. You can ignore the price

Thanks people. Going to test drive one this week. Decided to definitely go for a 35sd, and get an extended warranty. Just need to sell my other cars first. Anyone want a 911........

Just a picky point but it will either be a 3.0sd if prior to late 2009 or 35d Xdrive if after that point. All the same engine, the 35d one, just a bit of a change to the 4 wheel drive system when it became labelled as Xdrive. In any research I did I couldn't really see what had changed so think it was just branding as the 4 wheel drives all became Xdrive whatever. I saved a bit of cash and went for an 08 3.0sd.

Look for electric boot release, big old heavy boot which opens quite high, this option suits well if your wife isn't that tall. Panoramic roof also worth searching out.

Xenons are not standard even on M Sport, just so you know to look out for them because when I was looking quite a lot of what seemed like well specced cars did not have them.

You may be surprised how hard it is to get a car with loads of extras, media pack, 20" wheels, reversing camera seems to be the kinda stock options people choose but things like electric boot, pano roof, comfort access, TV etc are expensive when new and therefore rarer. Keep searching though and they are there.
