also, i was quite surprised to learn that the oem size for that powerful 480 bhp car was 255!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ......i was expecting massive rear tyres for such a powerful car, like the porkys.... very very confused!!!

Ive got to say that after 'upgrading' my tyres on the C63 to 265's, it was much grippier. This was great for the road and for someone of my limited ability.

Now talking of that, just look at how Harris slides it one way and then the next, so smooth, so controlled. How the hell do I learn how to do that or is it just ingrained in you?

However....it probably needs 395's for me because you would't believe how quickly they lose grip in the wet - it's got ridiculously violent oversteer even driving quite normally and with traction fully on! My misses can get the back-end to wiggle and she drives like a woman

I think it's my tyres which are P-Zero's (thats right, absolutely NOTHING to do with me or my driving ability ). I've had a set before on the Maserati and never really rated them on that...the driving characteristics they promote (i.e. they don;t grip in the wet) are beyond my limited ability so the next set will probably some of those highly regarded Michelin Pilot Supersports and see if they can keep me facing the right way

Still, the Jag tyres are narrower than the 305's that were fitted to the rear of the Porsche...no wonder that liked to understeer so much!


Anyway, back on topic....who on here reckons their driving skills are god-like enough to drift a car through a series of bends like Harris?

wait, I thought it was worse to go wide when its wet?

someone please correct me if i'm wrong here, but I always thought thinner tires were better in the rain?

Thinner tyres are better in the snow, not the rain. Assuming you have decent tread left, (i would say 3mm+) you should not have less grip with a wider tyre in the rain. This assumes the tread has the ability to disperse the water, so if it is torrential, you may come unstuck......

Because you're confusing grip with handling. Wider tyres will provide more grip as there is more rubber in contact with the road, obviously, but it doesn't follow that a car with more grip handles better than one with less.

With more grip, when you do exceed the limit the breakaway may be so sudden because of the loading that it's uncontrollable but with less grip the breakaway is more progressive and the driver knows more about whats going on beneath him, ergo it handles better with less grip.
