Fuel range = zero. Fuel still available
Fuel tank of 53 liter in the 1M. Fuel range = 0. Managed to refuel almost 51 liter. So I assume fuel range = 0 implies you still got at least 2 liter available. Depending on the road conditions (flat/hill), driving environment (city/highway) and engine condition (cold/warm), this should normally allow you at least 20 final kms (however, needless to say it ain't unhealthy for the engine to run on 100% empty). Board computer is warning you all the time anyway ("Get fuel, buddy!").
Anyone managed to refuel more than 51 liter with the 1M ? |

From personal experience, you've got about another 15-20 miles you can go, at least, when the range hits zero.

So? Its like this in all cars.
I think its actually a law in the books in the US. All cars still have a solid 2L or half a gallon of fuel when the dial hits 0 |

Artemis - you need to do a "hard calibration" of your fuel gauge... that is run the car out of gas and then you KNOW(!) how many liters it takes to fill the tank. <jk>
Btw... doesn't the fuel tank hold 55 liters? Maybe it is 53L. Somehow I remember 55 liters though. I never go that low(anyway) with my 135i I always refuel at 46L or so. Way before the fuel light comes on. Also... IF you go into the instrument pannel (kombi) hidden menu - you will see the actual liters in the tank! Most new cars don't show an instantaneous fuel level but rather an "buffered" value. |

EDIT: I do agree however that no one should run a car until almost empty, but refueling at 50%? C'mon! |

No - I said once it reaches 50% on the guage, start looking for the next top rated gasoline station in your area. When it is convenient fill it up. If that is the same day or a day later no problem. Otherwise you might be forced to fill up with cheap crap from a discount joint with leaky undeground storage tanks. Aslo, did you ever notice how on most cars the top half of the tank actually contains more fuel than the bottom half? It seems to move from 50% to 20% a lot faster that from 100% to 70%.

Like all of you I am indeed aware about the fuel reserve margins all cars take into account. However wanted to find out if anyone knows the specs re the 1M. Experienced a couple of times the zero range figure with my E46 M3's and rarely managed squeezing more than 60 liter in the 63 liter fuel tank (I'm also familiar with the phenomenon of the sudden range drop indication when approaching the zero figure: no change in driving conditions and suddenly the range rapidly decreases). I just assume the 1M is a bit more tight as regards fuel reserve, as its fuel tank capacity is only 53 liter (instead of 63 liter).
Reason I wanted to empty the fuel thank lately: got fuel at a station abroad offering 98RON with 5% ethanol (so-called "bio fuel"). I cursed but had no choice, so wanted to get rid of all that fuel before refueling with the pure stuff again. Car is too young to assume a lot of dirt has accumulated at the bottom of the fuel tank to be sucked into the system. Refueling at 50% ? Man, that's a bit overly cautious methinks, a bit like some women carrying their bottles of water and tissues everywhere. |

One time, during a middle-of-the-night trip to the emergency room, I drove my car almost 20 miles with the BC reading 0 miles left. Literally every gas station we passed was closed. As we pulled into the ER parking lot, the engine stuttered. I called BMW Roadside Assistance and they spotted me a few gallons.

Best thing to do if you really are that concerned about finding a premium gas station: download the free Shell app on your iPhone and it'll show you all the Shell stations near you. Works amazingly well in Europe and in the US, used it during my ED trip and 1200 mile ride from PCD. For example, while in Europe I was able to find now only where there were shell stations, but which ones had the V-Power 100 Octane gas!

Once this saved my ass badly... In old 5 series, middle of the night for last 40 km light about low then very low then nearly empty I was ready to call someone to ask for help, but managed to drive nearly another 40 km's with no fuel. From that day I love German engineers.
As someone said, when you get Low-Fuel you can just start thinking that you might need to put some fuel in it this week |
