Question ONE of 740 trim POLL

It appears to me that there some mixed signals on the interest in a customized commemorative START/STOP button trim for the US 1M owners. This item would be a direct replacement piece(not an overlay) for the existing silver trim. It would be made with a high pressure injection molded quality ABS plastic with the lettering(not engraved). This will give a very high quality OEM type finished look. There is several finishes to choose from(gloss, matte, textured 1 and 2). Colors options are endless. I have narrowed it down to a few I think could work with the interior of the 1M. The process is complicated to make an exact piece and the mold alone is in the thousands in order for it to look and fit perfect! I obviously don't want to lose money doing this endeavor and would be happy breaking even with shipping cost or making something for my time(trust I won't get rich doing this and my day job pays much better) If there is little or no interest, no hard feelings, I will just make one single one for my car. I don't think BMWUSA will do anything like this for us, so I thought I would take the initiative. Even if they do you will be out a small amount of money, but will still have a custom 'colored' trim piece that some make like more anyways. So help me figure out what type, color and cost you guys are willing to pay for this.

Multiple choices in the poll are encouraged, one for each area of interest.

How's about ONE of 740 (top) and 1 series M Coupe (bottom) as an option?

Stamped aluminum would have been ideal, but I understand the flexibility plastic offers.

Engraved aluminum may be cheaper than you think and would resrmble the "year of the one" variant I had on my first 1er.

Either way, I think the best quality to price ratio would be a small, engraved aluminum plaque.

I've done the research. The OEM stock trim is plastic with an aluminized finish on top. The "year 1" piece is also plastic with the aluminum finish as well. If you know of a way to get a stamped aluminum trim piece for less that will also clip into the start button properly by all means get-er-done. Tell me where to send the money?

SIGH.... I thought the OP of the thread was quite clear and made no mention of plaques.

I agree with what others are saying.
I personally would not purchase one of any color, but would purchase if it looked identical to stock but with the inscriptions.

I believe the plaque is still a better option, possibly placed below the CD drive.

OR in front of the passenger seat below the alcantara, much like these following cars. (for this I'd recommend a single line perhaps "Limited 1 of 740" or "BMW ///M Limited 1 of 740")
In pic... Scuderia, 458, gt2rs, gallardo, taurus

Sorry to bring this up but if you are going to do this maybe consider the plaque again haha
Thanks for your efforts though

Why wouldn't silver as a color choice be an option? Are all of these colors solid plasticky colors? No way to do something metallic?

BTW...thanks...really..for doing this!

The 'ring' requires a CAD file to be created so that the exact measurements and most importantly the 4 'undercut' clips are replicated in final production for perfect fit/finish. The CAD file is sent off to the a manufacturing plant that make a steel mold of the CAD item and is polished to a mirror finish with the raised letters in place. Once the plastic is injected into the mold the letters will appear 'engraved'.

The plaques would be super easy in comparison. I just would never stick any plaque directly on my dash. I just don't think it would look good and it may damage the dash as a result. This ring is totally reversible. And for $30-40 bucks? I wish someone else would do this, I would gladly give you $40 to not have to. But hey I'm not trying to convince anyone into doing this, if there is not enough interest or no one is willing to pay more than $20 for this, I just won't proceed. It's cool. I just thought with my access to CAD and various contacts I thought it would be nice to offer my help.

It's doable but I am not BMW and do not have the resources or mass production on my side with such a limited run(200-300 tops that "might" be interested). Also, the metalized finish would drive the cost up and doesn't seem people would be willing to pay to play.

LMAO Why does every ferrari in the pics have fire extinguishers? I'd say a plaque would be cool, or a start button similiar to the 08 135s have.

Thank you for doing this.

I'm interested in the ring, but, unfortunately, not interested in any of the color options.

I'd prefer the stock look of the aluminum, with a simple 'One of 740', rather than 'ONE of 740'

Metak, How easy is it to remove and replace the ring around the starter button?

Personally I would be most interested in a solid silver plastic color that closely matches the OEM part. But I guess color can always be discussed later as the color choice doesn't affect the tool design, unless we are talking about varying the material as well.

My point exactly. I laughed pretty good when i saw the extinguisher after seeing all the pics of the 458s and such over the last year or so, especially on the top gear BBC American road trip
