Oil Light @ 4k?

Hey I've searched but maybe not far back enough. Anyone had the oil light come on already? I'm at 4,000 miles. I checked the oil level through the instrument cluster last week and it was at about 1/3 which I thought was odd. Today driving around a little "!" triangle came on and when I shut the car down the oil light came on. When I go to check it through the instrument cluster it just shows that light again, and not the level.

Anyone else already burned through their oil? Where is it going? I haven't taken it to the track at all and so the only stress it gets is the occasional full throttle getting on the freeway.

Should I schedule a service appointment or just add more oil?

Also, TIL that the inside headlamp will turn on in the direction of the angle you point the steering wheel. I thought that was odd? Also they both turn on when you put the car in reverse. Anyone else ever noticed that? I thought that was interesting but I guess pretty useless, maybe someone can tell me what that's for haha.

Thanks!

Happened to myself at about 8k. Just buy a quart and add some in or take it to the dealer for a top off. I just added my own and then the light turned off.

Oil consumption

I posted a thread on this a couple of months ago...I am at 4400 miles now and consistently put a quart in every 600 miles! I don't drive the car hard, broke it in per BMW and have not tracked it.

Not sure if oil may be leaking past turbo bearing seals. And not sure if the local dealer is competent to diagnose what the problem may be.

That may be your problem. An engine has to be subjected to load during the "break-in" period in order to properly seat the rings. If this doesn't happen, you'll burn a lot of oil.

A quart every 600 miles? Something is wrong if that's the case. I've heard of a quart every 5-6k before in N54's but every 600 is ridiculous. And to say that's based on the type of breakin is silly, there are tons of ladies driving 135 verts that have NEVER gotten over 4500 RPMs and I can practically guarantee they aren't adding oil every 600 miles.

Thanks guys... took it in and they added a quart and said it was totally normal! Tech said it can burn a quart every 700 miles and still be considered normal. Whoa.

That sounds like total BS to me. I would get a second opinion. I would have to go to the dealer every 2-3 weeks if that were the case.

Agree.. TOTAL BS..

Had my tuned 135i for over 35,000 km, and never used a drop of oil between oil changes, and now with the 1M never used a drop before the 2K service and now on 3K and no oil issues..

+2. Total BS

Even my E39 M5 didn't consume that, and those cars were oil hogs. No N54 should consume as much, somethings is amiss.

I agree it is totally bs! I'm just glad it took me 4k before I needed oil. I can handle putting a quart in there every six months. But yeah every 600 or 700 miles that's hardcore oil consumption. Hopefully whatever is causing it will give out completely before the warranty expires!
