aftermarket alarm install question LCI
I bought a 2011 328i recently and was wanting to install a basic alarm (DEI 3901T). Last week I installed a remoteKEY+ and a multimedia interface kit with front/rear cameras.
I was wondering if someone else has done this alarm install themselves and knows where to connect the alarm brain. The only directions specific to BMW are where to connect the CAN wires and i was unable to find another wiring guide. Just need to know where to connect some of the wires from the main harness. From the install manuals, i think i have figured out some of them and which ones are not needed (car connections in red). main harness: N1/1 RED (+) 12V Constant Power - either battery or +12v at the OBII plug N1/2 BLACK (-) Chassis Ground Input - many places to choose from N1/3 RED/WHITE (-) 200mA Auxillary Channel Output - not needed N1/4 BLUE (-) Instant Trigger Input (hood status) - ? N1/5 ORANGE (-) Ground While Armed Output (starter-kill) - not needed? N1/6 WHITE (-) Light Flash Output (parking light or hazard) - ? N1/7 BROWN (+) Siren Output - Siren red wire N1/8 BLUE/WHITE (-) Status/shunt Input - not needed N1/9 BROWN/WHITE (-) 200 mA Horn Output - ? CAN Harness: N7/1 LIGHT GREEN SW CAN BUS - Not needed N7/2 ORANGE/GREEN CAN BUS (high) FT (HS) - Orange/Green under drivers side dashboard N7/3 ORANGE/BROWN CAN BUS (low) FT (HS) - Green under drivers side dashboard I'm not sure where 4, 6, and 9 wires are and also if 5 is needed. Any help would be appreciated. Here are links to the manuals: BMW specific - http://www.xpresskit.com/DocumentDow...irmwareid=2287 generic - http://www.xpresskit.com/DocumentDow...2&firmwareid=0 thanks |

Here's my take:
N1/1 RED (+) 12V Constant Power - Don't use the OBD port -find a constant thick wire under the dash. There are plenty to choose from. N1/2 BLACK (-) Chassis Ground Input - Ground it to metal. N1/3 RED/WHITE (-) 200mA Auxiliary Channel Output - For trunk pop, etc. Not needed. N1/4 BLUE (-) Instant Trigger Input (hood status) - This is hood pin input. Overkill - skip. N1/5 ORANGE (-) Ground While Armed Output (starter-kill) - Not needed. N1/6 WHITE (-) Light Flash Output (parking light or hazard) - This is your confirmation. When you lock/unlock the car, the parking lights flash, as well as when the alarm is going off. I'd skip this step as it tends to need relays on BMWs. N1/7 BROWN (+) Siren Output - Connect to the siren (+) side. N1/8 BLUE/WHITE (-) Status/shunt Input - Not needed. N1/9 BROWN/WHITE (-) 200 mA Horn Output - Horn honk - honks the horn on arm/disarm/panic. |

Post some pics of your install as to location mounting of each component. Also, a review of this alarm would be nice

i may want to also connect the hood pin (if it is easy to get to) so that location/wire color would be appreciated also. I saw the other thread about an alarm install and that guy has a wiring diagram. his shows to be a pink/black wire on the main harness 10 pin connector. is this harness under the drivers side? i only recall seeing 2 connectors that were identical size when i was in the glove box. no 100% sure if they would be the same since his is a 335i and mine is a 328i. |

I see there are different chip versions, the current is 2.7. Do you know how to determine what version you have. And they can be updated.

you need to buy the xkloader2 to flash the firmware. costs about $20. i think it will also tell you what version is already present on the alarm. http://www.xpresskit.com/product.aspx?productid=422 |

I got the idea from your thread.
The remotekey+ was not that hard to install as it comes with pretty good directions. This alarm does not though. I guess they really don't want you installing it yourself, but i don't really think it is worth it to pay someone a few hundred dollars to install it as its only a few wires. Also, the alarm only costs about $50. |

lol $50?! my installer made out! i left the job to the pros but paid for it $$$, i think i paid $300 and some change for the alarm and the install.
i had them leave the car horn lead off, so it only would use the siren which was mounted in the engine compartment. The RK+ was hooked up behind the drivers side dash air vent above the headlight switch. i ran the little RK+ buzzer through the firewall and installed it near the ABS module. RK+ buzzer is a perfect match to BMWs chirp. I ran the RK+ usb down by the OBD port, and i configure it with my MacBook running their software inside Parallels, works like a charm. That alarm has been very dependable, no falsing. in fact i forget its even there. The alarm has only gone off when ive had to disconnect the battery. Once it re-learns the doors are all shut again, all of its settings are recovered so you dont have to re-program it if you do work on the car and pull the battery. thats awesome that your tackling this yourself and posting the info, it'll help many others. you'll turn this into a very affordable and non invasive solution.

that's not bad. i was quoted between $300 and $400 for install. i'm sure you paid mostly for labor. i just wish i would have installed the siren when i did the remotekey. not looking forward to running another wire into the engine compartment.

when they installed the RK+ i told them "not to worry about the buzzer". it was after the fact, i regretted not doing the buzzer since i found the DEI chirps were really aftermarket sounding. So i installed the RK+ buzzer myself, it was very straight forward coming from the drivers side. but after finishing your project its prob the last thing you feel like doing again.

I went the other way, through the passengers side. its how it tells you in the install guide. you have to take out the ecu and and a bunch of other stuff and it was a pain. i will probably go through the drivers side with the siren this time.

i agree, lengthening the buzzer cable if necessary and just going to the drivers side will be way easier.
will your DEI "chirp" the siren if you try to lock your car and the trunk or door is not shut? thats the only thing i wish mine did... maybe i can program it but their literature, as you noted, sucks.
