Hehe oops! At least your car fits in your garage with enough room to change the wheels; if I put my E92 in my garage, I'd have to get out of the car Dukes of Hazzard-style!

The 1st October 2011 was 25-30c.
The best, and only time winters should be fitted is when the conditions call for it. People who have fitted them in the last couple of weeks have made the right call IMO. People who fitted them in October and November absolutely didn't. |

October was ridiculously warm to be fair. As was a lot of November.

Well I apologise for my language. It was meant as surprise rather than an insult. And I can assure you it wasn't 25 - 30c in Sheffield. I thought my mind might have been playing tricks but Met Office stats say a high of 15.9 and a low of 9.2 That may be higher than average, I don't know. But hardly the balmy weather you experienced.

It was quite hilarious to see how many BMWs (3 series and 1 Series') were abandoned on a dual carriageway last night as they simply wouldn't move. One was trying to pull away, with the rear wheels producing a lot of smoke! I must have seen at least 8 in just a 2 mile road! Luckily mine stayed at home!

The figures you post are the mean average not the peak. On the 1st of October I picked up my new car. It was a stunningly hot day which saw me drop my son off at cub camp, pick up the new car and then head up to Sheffield (High Green). It may not have hit 30 in Sheffield but it was certainly high 20s all weekend. |

Our Freelander is ace in the snow, better than the Discoverys we've had in the past , which were hard to stop due to their weight. But the E91 with winter tyres has been pretty good too.

I drove home Saturday evening from Camberely to Solihull on the M40. Winters fitted on 9th Dec last year; did me proud. Steady 30-40mph, passed dozens of abandoned cars, including Audi Quattros. With the somewhat regular snow we seem to get, it just does not make sense anymore not to fit winters.
Son was the most pissde off, he slept through most of the journey, only the video the wife took of some of the journey as proof. Long live the Vredesteins's...One happy owner! |

I'd say fitting them as close to the point of needing them is correct. Otherwise you'll wear them out sooner and have a drive with less than perfect steering feel until such times.

Turns out the winter tyres alone were not enough to get up the 6" of snow up the 200m 1:6 steep slope from our house. Not helped by a sharp bends which made a good run up impossible (though plenty of oversteer trying. I was surprised as the winters were otherwise very good in the deep snow - but to be fair it's a very difficult hill in these conditions....(but good for sledging yesterday)
This is just the start of it.....it gets worse.... So it was out to the snow chain shop at lunchtime for a set of these bad boys. Fair to say business for chains was brisk!

Who actually would have had winter tyres fitted on 1 October, not many I imagine. Most would have fitted end of Oct at earliest and many were into Nov.
Like I said before its a 3 or 4 year investment, I reckon over that timescale there will be plenty of times I'm very glad of them. |

Got caught out last winter, as we had a snow fall in early Novenber and I was out in it, 60 miles from home on summer tyres. Was only just able to keep moving, as it came down so thick and fast. HighlandPete |

I was about to comment that you must be the only person in England who puts their car in their garage. Usually the garage is full of junk and the car is outside. Then I realised, you have moved to France |
