How bad is it to drive on bald tires?

Is it really dangerous? I live in SoCal... I'm guessing on dry road it's not too bad, ya?

In the rain, prob horrible.

Depends on how fast you drive too...Instead of risking your life and other people's, buy new tires.

Yes it is extremly dangerous and not smart to drive on tires nearing the wear mark let alone bald. What is your reasoning for not having good tires? Many crashes are due to bald tires.

This.

There is no excuse to let the tire tread get that low...

very bad. Slightest rain, and you'll end up in some ditch. Not worth it.

Keep your traction control on. Use a lower gear. Drive slower. And if you can put a penny with the Abe Lincoln's head in the groove between your treads, and if the tread covers up any part of his head, then you are still okay (more than 2/32"). If his head is completely visible above the tread, then you need to replace.

Only if it rains or snows. Having bald tires on dry road is actually safer since you have more contact patch.

It is also more fuel efficient.

Not really as the chance of a puncture or blowout is greatly increased. And it is also LESS fuel efficient as the OD of the tire is reduced, resulting in more tire (and engine) revs per mile.

OP, after you get your new tires mounted, please buy a tread gauge and monitor your tire wear - it's not that difficult.

Do you value your life and most importantly the lives of others? How hard is it to go to the local tire shop or order from Tirerack?

Thanks. Working on cars for a living has made me realize that there are a frightening amount of less than roadworthy cars barrelling down the road with me every day. Needless to say I'm a little paranoid about EVERYBODY on the road. Tires are the only contact you have with the road, so you better make it good!
