Running in service - denied!

I just called Park Lane BMW a call to book my VO in for 1200 mile running in service and they flat refused to do it. They told me that only M3 and M5 needed running in service.

I was incredulous and after some discussion with their booker decided to give up and try another dealer. But I've just checked the M supplementary owners manual and the service schedule and there's no mention of it in any of the literature. What's the deal with this service? Is it an unofficial one? The dealer who sold me the car told me that the running in service was required, but since I can't find anything official I presume I'll need to pay outside the service pack cost. Assuming I can find a dealer prepared to do the service that is!

I just had mine in 2 weeks ago for its 1200 mile service (onboard computer was saying it was needed on start up even), booked in at Park Lane Nine Elms, sorted, no problems, they knew all about the 1200mile run in service (engine oil, filter, gear box, diff and a full check over...........

Get back to your dealer who sold you the car and ask for some help.....

Should be part of the service pack. I had my 1200 service done at Sytner Maifenhead and it was covered by service pack. Call them back and ask them to speak to HQ then book it somewhere else anyway.

Some advice please on a related topic: I'm now getting the "service" message on start-up, by mine has only done 700km/450miles. Is it normal? I have driven it very softly during run-in, but it has been standing still for a long time when I was out traveling so maybe it's about time as well as distance? What do you say - should I ignore the message and wait for 1200miles or take it in now? I was thinking maybe it starts giving the message well before you need to take it in.

It is normal mate, I was getting it on pick up as it sat waiting for collection as we was away. The initial run in service indicator is set by the factory over a short time period rather than the mileage, still you wait until the 1200mile mark....

Nice find! Rikx1m!
I talked to Both importers in my country and both stated a check between 1000-2000 km. They are trying to mess with you.

I was also told by my delivery "specialist" that the 1M would not be requiring a run-in service. I simply nodded and grinned.

Needless to say I won't be going back

There are a lot of very special specialists who work for BMW nowadays all around the World. Maybe, they were hired as a hidden support program for retarded people or something? If this would be the official information, I would have more respect towards them.

Hello JMK - to confirm what others have said, it needs a first engine oil service around 200km. In my case I followed the service indicator and have just had it done at 1422 miles (and even then it was saying it had 40 miles still to go). The cost of this is included in the £400 service pack.

Yep mine was the same. Speak to the guys at Cooper Croydon 0845 125 5926. They will sort you out.

To avoid possible confusion: for sure Tamara meant 2000 km (1200 miles).

For some over here it was free of charge. I had to pay for mine. Depends on the type of maintenance program. If I were you, I would go elsewhere, otherwise you risk that they also use the wrong diff oil.

Thanks guys, I'll try another dealer. Just to confuse things further I emailed the dealier in Newcastle who sold me the car initially, and told me about the 1200 mile service during handover.

I told him what happened and his reply was that all M versions have handbuilt engines which need the running in service apart from 1M and X5M which have factory built engines and don't need the service.

I'll try Nine Elms as Aussie in London suggests they know the score and it's not too far.

I wish the service indicator would come on!

Which location of Park Lane did you call mate as Nine Elms is Park Lanes main service centre, that's all they do, around the corner at Battersea is their main warranty and investigation centre, if you contacted them they probably wouldn't have a clue, my wife rang Nine Elms and they knew what had to be done and in quick time.....0207 514 3554 / 0207 819 2000

If you can, find a different dealer. After such experience, I would be terrified if they touched my car.

Unbelievable, dealer is owned by BMW UK as well?

Take it to Paul Travers M technician at Specialist Cars, Stevenage, he's the main man.

And the very irony of jmk2000's encounter: see the slogan printed as footer on each page of the official BMW document: "Fix it right the first time is our ultimate goal." Seems that the clowns at his dealership are way off track for reaching the "ultimate goal".
