Buying 4 year old tires?

Hey guys,

I found a deal on two brand new never mounted pilot sport tires, but the manufacture date is late 2008. Is this OK to buy?

I was just concerned cause they have been sitting for 4 years, not sure what kind of effect that has on the tire rubber.

Thanks!

not recommended, the tire compound would have hardened up. that's why they give you the deal.

Is there anyway to soften it back? And is the same true even if the tires were not exposed outside?

There are cars on the streets with tires exposed to salts/heat/cold that are more the 8 years old ... and still going ...
How many accidents are caused by old tires - ? Not mistaking with bold tires.

I think you will be fine, sure they are not 2012 new but they are still new tires. No if they were like 10-20 years old then I would pass on them.

Tires usually have a shelf life of 6 years if stored properly. I would inspect the tire thoroughly. Look for cracking and signs of dry rot. Keep in mind you may want to retire them in the next 2 years.

+1

Four year old tires are absolutely fine. Not even close to being an issue.

Direct exposure to sunlight is the most damaging to tires. Next most important variables would be large temperature swings and possibly humidity. The vast majority of indoor environments are much easier on tires than being stored outside.
