Power Outlet Relocation/Retrofit kit

Anyone try this? I realize it works if you have the cigarette lighter already as it is a relocation kit, but it seems to suggest you can possibly retrofit it even if you don't have the "Smokers Pack".

It would be great for those having the Akra valve control, or portable Nav, non-hardwired radar detector, etc.

The instructions say it requires the smoker's package. If you don't have the smoker's package, you'll have to wire it up. Wiring is not included.

Seriously though, if you can drill a hole in plastic, the socket only cost $5 at most autoparts stores. Most of the cost is for them to drill a hole in a piece fo plastic you already have.

Why not just buy the cig lighter parts from any BMW dealer? It will cost you less than $20. Then just drill your own hole and run your wires(with a fuse!) to the fuse box for power and ground.

Dackel, is there a diagram for the parts that would replace the storage bin with the extra 12V socket?

If you look for posts on the BMW Portable Pro navigation system you can get the installation instructions. The older model installation may actually be best for this, the model that uses the Garmin 360. Those instructions tell you to tap a wire that is located in the drivers footwell on the door side. Right below this panel. I tied in at this location and put an accessory outlet inside my dash, tie wrapped to the steering column so it doesn't move around. I have my Garmin 885t power cord plugged into it. Hides the wires. I see no reason you could not tap in the same place and put an outlet in the panel. I don't know how much you could pull this way but it should easily be enough for electronic items. It would save running a wire over to the fuse box behind the glove box.
