FURIOUS!!! Is this acceptable?

After speaking with Safelite AND Nationwide yesterday where they BOTH confirmed to me that the work order included replacing the windshield, rubber trims and sensors, I decided to go ahead with it and took my 335 down to the local Safelite shop.

The guy said all paperwork was ready and they indeed had all the parts needed to make the replacement, so I handed over my keys.

2 hours later, he walks out and says, your car is ready, but a few minutes later while he is charging up my CC with my deductible pay, he says, we had to REUSE the rubber trims because the one that was sent to us did not fit, but it's all good, the old one wasn't in too bad of a shape.

I was like, what? Why wasn't I informed about this before the decision was made to go ahead and reuse the old one. If they would have asked me, of course I would have said NO and just wait however days needed for the correct one to be shipped in.

Upon closer inspection of the paperwork, it lists the flexi mold as being one for a 2007 328i! Mine is a 2007 335i! Of course it wouldn't fit!

I told him that this was not acceptable and demanded the correct molding to be ordered and I would bring the car back to have it installed. He said I need to call tomorrow because the guy who processes all orders was off today.

I took a couple of pics and would like your opinion. I don't think I am over-reacting because I paid a $500 deductible and it's ridiculous that they reused the old molding. What you guys think?

Yeah. Tell your insurance company it was not repaired to your satisfaction. They will take care of it. Happens all of the time.

Is there a difference between a 328 & 335 molding? I too would figure something like that would be the same. That does suck though. Hope it gets resolved soon!

I agree! I was so furious, man. I know I probably came off like a douchbag but I told the guy "this isn't a $2,000 Honda Civic, that molding looks like shit". He didn't say a word.

The E92 328, 335 and M3 (original and LCI) use the exact same part. #51317119711. Why would the 335 have "special" window trim?

Regardless, it looks poorly done.

Most places will help out with your deductible or even throw in a free car starter (not that it would work for German cars). Even seen some get a free detail with deductible waived.

Back to the point - at minimum, they should deduct the cost of the trim from your charges. Secondly, looks terrible and I wouldn't accept it. Did you take it to your dealer and use their glass people?

That looks like ass - wasn't even installed correctly - there is a gap between the trim and WS.

Definitely would make them do over.

Personally, I would never take my BMW to any other shop than dealer for glass replacement

That was my intention from beginning, but my local BMW dealer quoted this at $1,215 while Safelite quoted it at $756.

Nationwide refused to pay more than $756 ($500 of which was my deductible anyway!) so I was sort of forced into going with Safelite. If I insisted in taking it to BMW, I would have to pay the $500 deductible PLUS the difference ($459) for a total of $959!

You don't even need that rubber, it's ornamental. What's important is the bead between the glass and the car. On the other hand, if they did that with the molding, you can only imagine what they did with the bead. I'd find any excuse to have them remove it and redo it (the glass). I bet your vin window isn't exactly where it should be either.

I've never heard anything good about repairs done by Safelite. Sorry to say your experience hasn't swayed my opinion.

The more I look at the pics, the more I am appalled they did such an asinine job. I mean, were they expecting I wouldn't give a fuck and just be pleased with it? If I was the one doing such a shitty job, I would be embarrassed and would start looking for something else to work in.

That's putting it mildly... I wonder if due to this crapfest, can I DEMAND the work be done at BMW without me having to cough up the extra money for it.

Man alive, that looks horrible. It's an awkward situation because after a job like that I wouldn't trust them to be capable of doing a proper replacement; windshield replacements are not child's play and a poor one will leave you with water leaks. At the same time they are the only ones who will redo it for free, unless your insurance works something out with you.

Good luck man, I can't stand it when I have to go out of my way because someone can't do their job right.

Where do you live and which Safelite did this to you? They probably didn't expect to be using the old trim so they tore it off as fast as they could without thinking of reusing it again. That's why it looks so beat up.

At any rate, I personally would call the insurance company and tell them the job was unacceptable and to have it redone.

G/L!
