Issues with gas fill up.

My 4 month old BMW seems to have started having issues with pumping gas.

The last two times I filled my gas tank, it would take a few gallons, then gas pump stops like the tank is full. I then have to manually pumping gas in. It still takes another 8 gallons or more, and I have to put in in like a half gallon at a time. Gas pump handle kicks (in auto off when full), like when it really is full of gas.

It first happened when I was filing up at Costco. I thought it was just their pump. 2nd time I was filling up at Shell and it happened again. I had a little less than 1/4 tank when I went for a fill up. I have used these pumps previously (both Costco and Shell) and have never had any problems.

Any ideas what would cause this?
I have only used premium gas in all my fill ups.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Had this problem on other cars - think it depends on how deep you're putting the nozzle in, I had to put it in and out a few times for it to release.

Sexual innuendo galore.

Also you might experiment with your nozzle's angle (that's what she said!).

Yeah, sometimes I slide it in slowly a few times before pumping harder. I also don't like to make a mess and spill everywhere.

We are talking about pumping gas, right?

We're full service in NJ so I've gotten used to it. And it also happens on our 2011 car as well. One time as an experiment I told the guy it should take 8.4 gal, so he forced it. The f'in pump stopped at like 2 gal. Given that the attendants are never mad, I know I'm not the only one who has 2 cars that do this....

It seems to always happen to me at Costco. Never had an issue with Chevron.

This happens on my work vehicle all the time (which happens to have 205000 miles on it), but much worse I imagine, than what you're experiencing. Sometimes I can't get more than 30 cents worth of gas at a time before the nozzle clicks off, and will keep doing that as long as I feel like standing there fighting it like an idiot. My solution is to back the nozzle out of fill hole by about an inch and then fill up. When I find the sweet spot, it will never click off on me. I'm not sure if there are any safety concerns there, but I know exactly how much gas the tank takes, so no big deal.

OP, this happened to me at Costco, too. It happened so often that I have started holding the nozzle in when pumping, rather than putting it on automatic. The problem has gone away for me.

I'm going to try a new pump for my next fill up. Just a little strange that it started to happen very suddenly (2x in a row) at pump stations that I never had any issues before.
