I'd personally recommend the Hankook Ventus V12's as I've had personal experience with them. Both would be fine for daily driving though.

why I bought the Conti DWs:

**highly rated in TireRack comparison tests and by customer feedback.

**lowest weight among performance summer tires.

**high treadwear rating - I'm hoping to get 40-45k on them

I've had them for 15k miles. I'm happy with them.

Biggest surprise was how quiet they were compared to my previous tires (Sumitomo HTR Z3 and OEM Bridgestone run-flats)

No experience with the other tire but I see it mentioned on e90post frequently

Whichever one has a stiffer sidewall. A reputable source is pissed he got the Conti DW's cuz of the soft sidewalls.

In Canada, I asked quite a few places for Conti DWs. They were all out of stock. Hankooks are readily available at least in the GTA. So I went with Hankooks, even if I burst one in the future, I know I can order it with minimum downtime.

Btw, I haven't used the tires yet. Just bought them two weeks ago. Maybe the timing had something to do with why Contis weren't available.

And V12's are not exactly stiff either . I finally made mine tolerable by bumping up the pressures to 38 psi.

... what about "turn in" stiffness?

some complain the DW's don't have the steering response as others...

How do they compare to the hankook's? and what are the hankook's drawbacks?

Drawback is sidewall stiffness and turn-in responsiveness. They were a good buy with an acceptable trade-off when they were priced <$700. Now, not so much. Unfortunately there isn't a great mid-price/max performance tire in the 19" size right now.

OK, just to throw it into the mix how about Toyo Proxes TR-1s.. how do those fair on sidewall stiffness to the tyres mentioned?

I've had personal experience with both and the DW's are hands down better tires. I'd consider the V12's more along the lines of a General tire. Besides, when it comes to tire quality I've never heard Hankook in the same conversation as Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli....

It's really all personal preference... If you go on a Honda Civic forum I'm sure you'll read how Nexen tires completely out perform PS2's.

I recently went from 18' wheels with runflats to 19' wheels with the Cont DW. I have to say the difference is night and day. I would def go for the DW's.

There seems to be some confusion in this thread. To me it appears that some are talking about the DWS which is the 40,000+ miles all season tire. This tire is great in snow for an all season tire but has slower steering response and less dry grip than a summer tire. The DW is the max performance summer tire that would be more comparable to the Hankook Ventus V12 EVO. I would expect 20,000-30,000 miles out of the DW.

I was wondering the same thing. I put DW's on my wife's 328xi last spring and got one summer's use out of them. Don't know exact mileage, sorry.

EDIT: Did some research and the mileage was approx 14000. Mind you, there was still a little useable tread left but I was actually switching summer and winter tires across the the same rims. So, the remaining amount of tread wasn't enough to warrant putting them back on this spring. Plus, they had radial pull, conicity, (whatever the correct term is) with a plug in one of them, so I scrapped them.

....but all that said, they do stick - wet or dry. I was happy with them.

only 20-30? hope you are being conservative i managed 40+ on my Sumitomo HTRZ3s which have a lower treadwear rating. Maybe because I'm in the sunshine state doing highway driving (?)
