hill assist or hill hold

Hi guys

I was reading the manual about hill assist. I think its a really cool feature since there are some really steep hills in my area. I always had to use the parking
brake trick not to slide back if there were cars behind me (ie really steep).

One question though. Does the system always apply the brakes for the 2 seconds? Will it release early if I'm the clutch is being released and the gas applied (ie...I'm moving). I stalled this morning and I swear the brakes felt like they were still applied when I gave it gas.

thanks again

No, brakes are released as you start to move forward. Well, they should be

I'm pretty sure it's strictly timed 1-2 seconds. It sure seems it to me. It is a nice feature. I've had several cars that had it and at first I thought, "this is really unnecessary." Then I drove my old Miata and stalled it on the first 5 hill starts. That sold me on the feature.

the system always works nice for me - there is a steep ascent just when i leave my garage - so the feature is very nice - i did not even know the 1M has got it...

in my old touareg the hold time was about 2seconds - definitely feels shorter in the 1M and it seems the brakes are released precisely the time you accelerate

Just a reminder that it only works if your car is in gear. For whatever the reason maybe, if you're in neutral on a hill and release the brake you will be traveling backwards.

It's tied to the clutch, and perhaps the gas pedal (haven't tested it, so can't say for certain). If you're in neutral and your foot is on the clutch, hill assist will hold you.

I just experienced this for the first time last week. I started -trying- to roll backwards on the incline just so my senses could sort it all out. Can you imagine if we had all learned to drive stick with that feature??

I learned to drive in 1964 in a 1957 Studebaker with flathead six, a three-speed stick shift on the floor and a hill-holder. Not quite as exciting as my 1M, but far less complex. It had a dipstick, no engine cladding and a clear view of the ground when you popped the hood. I rebuilt the engine without pulling it out of the car - just removed the head, dropped the oil pan, unbolted the rods from the crankshaft, shoved the pistons out the top, slapped new rings on them, honed the cylinders with a drill attachment and slapped it all back together in the driveway. Ah, the education one gets just by being young and broke.

While the Studebaker may be simpler and bigger, likely heavier, I'm sure if you got into an accident with same velocity and angle, you'd survive much better in the 1M than a '57 Studebaker

mine disengages after about 1-2 seconds... i kinda wish it would hold until i touch the throttle... then again, i dont have an issue with hills so maybe its a moot point.
