Oil Catch Can for 1M

Seeing as how carbon buildup on the intake tracts and valves is such an issue with the N54 motor, is anyone taking steps to prevent it by using an oil catch can? Any opinions on which OCC is most effective?

It seems like it would be a smart thing to do now while our cars have relatively low mileage on them instead of waiting until 50k miles when our intakes look like this:

Glad you started this thread... I'm going to purchase the BMS OCC kit as well. Glad someone managed to install it, wasn't sure if it would work on our cars (the mounting points and included hoses).

Does anyone know if BMW has a valve cleaning program?

Edit: Is this the kit you purchased Franklin? http://www.burgertuning.com/BMW_335_oil_catch_can.html

After doing some quick research, it seems like the BMS OCC is the latest and greatest OCC for the N54. It's price isn't bad either; at least in comparison to the BHS unit.

I agree! Good thread. I'll probably look into the BMS OCC as well. They seem to make great products. Franklin, can you post a picture of your placement/install?

yup that's the kit. The install is the same as all other N54s.
The diverter valve hose is pretty close to the can and fitment is tight, but it fits.

Cant get a picture now as i have everything installed and it sits under the cowl. The can mounts on the driver side strutbar...

I will try to get a picture on Sunday (track day tomorrow).

Very good, useful thread. Anyone who plans to keep their 1M long time should have one imo. I sure am getting one. Waiting for the installment pictures.

Any update on geting pics added to this thread? Also, it would be great if someone who has installed this could comment on it's effectiveness on their car?

Thanks

I have been looking at this OCC. Provent makes OE units here in Germany. I think it costs around ~140 euros.

I ended up buying the Burger Motorsports OCC. I figured one would be better than nothing. I have yet to empty it, but when I eventually do, I will post pics. I posted some installed pics here:

Dackel,

I saw those after I purchased my OCC. They look good on paper, but has anyone with tried it out yet?

I have not seen anyone here using one on their N54/N55. Maybe someone over on the e90 forum has. The ProVent unit looks really good, with OE quality and design. I saw their stand at the IAA(Frankfurt Autoshow) and was impressed by their product line.

I wonder if the unit have the mounting brackets and hardware for our cars and convenient mounting locations.

With your install, did you have to trim the cowl cover?
