Neutral + the parking brake in my old car. I had a scare once when I left it and first and accidentally pulled my foot off the clutch.

I park in 1st, if I'm on a incline where the rear is higher than the front, like a downward slope I park reverse gear. I use the e brake too

E-brakes are for automatics, I use the parking brake and leave it in neutral. Neutral is just personal preference for me.

5th and 6th gear don't "hold" as much as 1st. Ever try push starting a dirtbike, etc. in first? How about in 5th? 5th is much much easier to move. If I were going through the trouble of throwing my car in a gear when parking, I'd choose 1st. However, your explanation makes sense given your routine. That's what caught me when I would park in a gear - my old routine of owning an automatic most of my life would take over at some points and I'd forget that I had a manual!
