Exclamation Alpine White Goodness!!! ** 335i vs ///M3 **

Friend of mine has a 2007 BMW 335i Alpine White with 4,800 miles. I have a 2005 BMW E46 M3 with 5,800 miles. We got together today to take some pictures and race clips.

Both are stock but the M3 has K&N intake and 19" Luffs wrapped with 275/30/19's. 335i is running on stock 18's.

1st Race -

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...95569050403385

M3 shifts early in 1st gear after launch. 335i catches up in 2nd and 3rd gear.

2nd Race -

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...47268882681097

M3 messes up the launch and the 335i gets a good jump.

3rd Race -

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...16507697505430

Both from a stop.

Basically, the 335i had GOBS of torque and power down low. The first 2-3 gears can really give the M3 a run for its money. The M3 had top end advantage and better gearing so it pulled more as speeds were climbing up. We raced up to about 110mph. 3rd gear and up, the M3 started to pull and put distance on the 335i. If we had gone longer to about 140mph... the M3 would have put alot more distance. I reckon the M3 would have done better with lighter stock 18's but I'm sure we're all willing to sacrifice some performance for style. We were going to race more and up to 140mph but the 335i started overheating after the last run so he had to stop.

So there you have it folks! We were both amazed on how the M3 can still manage to pull on a 7 year newer car with new technology, Twin Turbo's, and more torque. And we were amazed how well the 335i can hang with the Big Boy M3 that has always been. Big props to both cars!!

We took some pictures afterwards. Enjoy!

Sooner or later, he will be vishnu tuned with mods and I will be supercharged.

What do you think would happen if the M3 was completely stock?

The intake and extra tread is worth something.

Great photos. Good way to compare the E46 to the E90 body.

Intake adds barely anything and my wheels and tires hold me back considerably due to weight. I would have done better with my stock 18's.

Either way, he's getting 19's soon and we'll do more runs.

I've never understood how people on these boards say "we were both stock...except I have different intake and wheels and tires..." You have a modified M3. Granted, you have not modified it to any huge extent, but it is such a phallacious statement to say "I run a stock M3" when your car is obviously not stock by your own admission.

That's true. But it's easier to say the car is stock with an intake only. And the wheels actually make me slower so it kind of cancels everything out.

what about driver skills? without the same driver racing with a timing device, it is pretty hard to say that the m3 beats the 335i. the R&T and motortrend reviews that i read both put the 335i well over the m3 in 0-60 and 1/4 mile tests. don't know much about the handling aspect though...

Of course driver skill is important, but that's where the 335i had the advantage as well. He's an auto with paddle shifters so he's always running consistently no matter what. And I'm sure all of you know... the Automatic on the new 335i is no slouch. It's smooth and shifts very fast.

I'm a manual transmission, so it's hard to be consistent. The first video you see was where I messed up. I launched too hard so I was spinning too much, hence why I had to shift early into 2nd to gain grip again. Consequently, I dropped below the power band and thats why the 335i caught up.

The second race video you see... again, I launched too much and spun out while the 335i jumps ahead. But this time I shifted at redline so I gained ground in 2nd gear, and started pulling in 3rd... despite him having the lead first.

Third race was good and even. By the end of 3rd gear, I was about 3-4 cars ahead.

Once he gets procede and exhaust, he'll be much faster so I'll need 4.10 gears to compete again. Or just go all out and Supercharge the ///M.

We're motivation to make our cars faster. Good competition you can say to better ourselves.

Thank you for the comparison. Your car isn't stock cuz you have the front skirt which made it go faster jk lol!

I do believe it was a fair comparison. Your rims probably did more negative to the performance than what you gained from the intake.

Wait till that 335 gets chiped, m3 is done and also a big threat to the upcoming new M3 on the straights.

335 looks like it got a flat face compare to M3. M3 definetly has it on the looks department.

No doubt my heavy 19's held me back alot, but like I said... I'm willing to sacrifice some performance for style. :rocks:

And yup. 335i with procede and mods will definately be fast. But it still won't be able to hang with a Boosted ///M3.

Should be fun.

Ok so my friend with the 335i was hangin out over at his friends house and ran into an old friend. He has a modded 2005 Infiniti G35 Coupe 6-speed Manual with Intake, Exhaust, Chip, and Lightened Flywheel. My friend asked him if he wanted to race for pink slips as a joke, and got a surprising reply.

The guy with the G35 with mods said he burns E46 M3's on a daily basis and will burn a 335i without a problem. I told my friend to tell him to bring out his car on the weekend so we can run 3 ways.

What do you guys think? Is he full of sh(t or is his car really that much faster than stock? Because I have never lost to a G35 modded or not.

Chipped G35? I would be sceptical. There is hardly any chips out for the VQ35, unless he has Technosquare.

G35s are fast, But I dont think they can be an M3 killer. Unless its boosted you shouldnt have to worry about it.

If he wants to run for slips (I doubt it) then he most likely has a bottle hidden in the trunk because nobody would be stupid enough to race an M3 for pinks with those minor bolt-ons.
