Real Wood Trim??

Does anyone know if the wood BMW uses on their car is real wood???

I saw a picture of the backside of the centre wood trim and looks like plastic. But it could be that the wood is really thin.

Anyone know?

I believe it IS real wood. It is very thin and steamed to be made pliable.

I, too, read that it is real wood under the clear coat.

If you you will find your answer.

Long story short....plastic, topped with probably 1/16' or 1/32" veneer of real wood topped with a clear enamal. So, yes its real wood if you consider 1/16" squashed between plastic real wood. Same trick used by all the luxo brands.

It's a really thin piece of wood with on top of plastic with a clear resin coating (like those engineered flooring)

Not really, there is a super thin layer of plastic "clear coat" over the very thin piece of wood.

Oy...

A thin veneer of real wood is glued to a rigid substrate which is then molded to the actual foam plasctic trim piece. The wood veneer is then "clear coated" for protection.

By the way, this is the same way that Bentley and RR do it as well; no regular production cars have used solid planks of wood for years.

It is real wood, covered by a material called "Acrylic". This material is harder and more expensive than crystal, usually reserved for high-end cosmetic bottles or jars.

it's real wood. But does it really matter? I understand the argument between leather and leatherette, both has its pros and cons. But fake vs real wood? would you die of embarrasment if your car's equipped with fake wood and people found out about it?

They all use real wood veneer. Iirc veneers are inherently safer than solid planks of wood for obvious reasons. Plastic backed veneers do not explode in a grenade of sharp splinters in the event of an accident. I am sure there are other reasonings like costs, weight etc. You can also see this by the differing burls/patterns from car to car.

I suppose it would've been easier to make things out of solid wood vs veneers...

Part of the reason for the veneer vs is plank is saftey. In a crash a solid piece of wood can break and splinter. I don't think that you've seen solid wood in any car sold in the states since 67.

this guy is 100% correct. Most other cars use fake wood and do the same process as BMW but with fake wood.
