cupholder

i've searched this just now and nothing. so the cupholder cutout allows a redbull to fit perfectly. it's my understanding that many beverages (outside of us) of the soft drink variety come in similar sized cans. but wow. most over engineered cupholder i know of. and so easily broken.

In my opinion the e90 has the best cupholder in its class. Most other cars have a holder located behind the shifter which makes them usueless if you drive a manual. The BMW cupholder does a great job of holding my water bottle.

You can fit a soda can, standard 24oz beverage from fast food restaurant...

It does its job, just don't take a corner too hard...

My Acura had cupholders behind the (manual) shifter, and it worked quite well. BMW could get rid of the ashtray and replace it with cupholders.

Here's my story (besides the little stories of coffee dripping on to the floor):
Yesterday I bought a coffee on my way in, and put it in the cupholder to finish my drive in (another 5 mins). I didn't realize that the lid hadn't been put on properly. A hard right into the parking lot (I forgot about the coffee!) resulted in a coffee splash across my pant leg, the shifter boot & shifter, and of course the poor floor mat directly under the cupholder. Nice way to start the day. If the coffee had been closer to the floor, the splash wouldn't have been near as bad.

I think the things are well engineered, but they're way too high up to have hot beverages in. And passengers kind of freak out when driving with two coffees!

IMHO, cupholders should be eliminated entirely from the interior design of our cars. They were only added for the stupid US market who like to do everything else when they're behind the wheel other than paying attention to their driving. Finish your beverage before you drive off or get one of those camel back water dispensers that cyclists and professional race drivers use that suck it up thru a straw.
Thank you for letting me vent.

It's a good point. I never drink in my car, except for the occasional bottled water. But, I do buy coffee and bring it to the office every day. So a cupholder for that comes in handy. I think from now on I'll just use the rear ones...

Oh yes, I had a drink spill due to accelerating a little to fast.

Nevermind that, my girlfriend pointed out that they block vents. Especially the passenger cup holder. She said it was stupid and could melt certain items(ice cream, shake, etc.) or cool down certain items(coffee, tea, etc.)

My reply was BMW engineers knew that and just were lazy to change it. Good point though.

I like these cup holders placements over the E46 models where it's placed behind the shifter...makes shifting difficult cause it hits you elbow...or you have to put the center arm rest up to fit both in there...and no where to rest your arm...

My point is, these things will hold you beverage, if you use your common sense and take it easy on the corner..

On long trips they will be placed in a cooler in the trunk. They will be consumed at a rest stop or my final destination.

Me and my father LOVE all of the cupholders, both in his 2005 745Li and m E92 335i. We think its brilliant the way they each "adjust" to the size fo the drink placed in them. Also, for me, I love that the cupholder isn't right beside me, and that insteda there is a little empty holding area with rubber inside (right in front of the armrest) because I can rest my cell phone or other stuff there. Where the cupholder is now (right to the right of the readio) I can stretch my arm out to a PERFECT reach so that the drink is easily accessible and I don't have to lean forward, or back, or adjust the angle of my upper body to grab the drink (as I would if the drink is too close to me as it would be if the holder was in teh armrest/center consol area).

Let's do away with radios and CD players while we're at it. They take away from the driving experience anyway too. Seriously if you don't want to use them just don't.
P.S. what about brakes? They just make you go slower.

Oh goody, another thread about cup holders.

Every generation thinks they invented sex, and apparently every new BMW owner thinks they are the first to see the car.

hey just pointing out that there seems to have been some thought put into the cupholder. not enough though as it's really shallow and flimsy so hitting the smallest bump seems to launch drinks out of the cupholder.
