Points on your licence
Follwoing on from the "How fast do you drive on the motorway?" thread, I'm very interested to gauge what points people have on their licence, or have had in the past.
I'm happy to declare all - I am, in respect of penalty points, The Virgin Mary; I've not got one point on my licence, nor have I ever had in the (nearly) 19 years since passing my test. I've been pulled plenty of times (in the days before the labour government placed an over-reliance on speed camera's in lieu of well-trained traffic officers) but my humble approach when pulled over (and a persuassive argument that my speed was well judged with the conditions at the time) meant I've never been officially punished beyond a good bollocking at the side of the road. I'm also strict about never speeding in a built up zone and, when it comes to drinking and driving, I operate on a zero-alcohol basis - I know a lot of people will have have "just the one" or "one or two" but I've never seen the point - if I'm going to the pub, I'm going to get ruined. If I'm driving, I'm driving and never the twain shall meet. So, who's got what?!

Currently have 3, thought I could make the green light, turns out I was along way off it, ended up running a red with a marked car behind me, idiot.
Have had 3 for speeding, got clocked at 91mph on the A14 South of Bury St Edmunds, was lucky it was three as I had slowed for what I thought was a speed camera from a very silly three figure speed. |

Zero in nearly 17 years of driving (feel old working that one out!), although not saying I didn't probably deserve the odd 3 here and there :-)

6 points (but no fine) for no insurnace which is a long story and involved my mum (i was 17) opening my mail and not telling me. The court came down heavier on her than me.
3 points for speeding. Banned for dangerous driving in Scotland. 125.4mph on the A9 near inverness. The only other vehicle about was the unmarked copper in a lay-by Banned for being stupid enough to drive whilst banned. I know...I'm an idiot. 6 points for doing 104mph on the M62. 5 points for doing 54 in a 30 in a ford escort van which wasn't capable of doing 54 mph in the location specified. I got 5 points instead of 3 as I contested it. My license is now clean. I rarely speed these days. I've mellowed with age. |

In over 15 years of driving I've been done for speeding twice.
12 years ago I got 3 points for 64mph in a 40mph zone. It was quiet and not a built up area but still glad for only 3 points. 4 years ago got another 3 points for 81mph on a 70mph road. Very clear dry day with minimal traffic. The van was nicely hidden round a little sweep in the road after a bridge where he caught you before you could see him. The cameras are operated by the speed camera partnership on behalf of the police. Seems to be they are a little more keen to catch volumes of speeding drivers on the safer busier roads for minimal offences than deter people on the roads with a bad accident record. |

I had 6 points on my license when it first came due to being caught driving at 16 with no license or insurance. I was trying to do my drunken mate a favour by driving his car home.
Since then in 20 odd years I've had 3 points for a traffic light offence, 3 for 40 in a 30 (before they offered the speed awareness source) and 3 points for blasting past an unmarked traffic volvo in my beloved vr6, unbeknown to me he was going to do a vectra/cavalier that had gone haring past me but I though it was all good fun and went blasting past the pair of them He was a decent guy though and let me watch myself on his monitor before rightly calling me a plonker. I think my speed was way over 100 mph but he did me on my average speed from point a to b which was around 93 (I think). That was well over 10 years ago and I've never had a point since. |

I have currently got 3 points, got caught doing 78 in a 60 mph road...
Just got a letter saying i got caught doing 35 in a 30 mph zone.... every one else flies on that road!!!!!!! So was asked if i wanted to sit the drivers awareness course for £84 or take 3 points and a fine!!!! I chose the course...... doing it in 2 weeks..... Do you think if i was to ring my ins co and tell them i done a driver awareness course they would reduce my ins for the car???????

When I was 17 i got caught riding a motox bike down the road. It was the day I had spent my hard earned savings on a motorbike and had pushed it about half a mile down the ride to have a thrash around on some waste land. After an hour or so I decided id quickly ride it home. But it was a main road dual carriage way and I was going the wrong way on the pavement. Only probably 15mph but police car mounted the pavement in front of me and in view of my house and stopped me. Copper seemed okay with me but i got summoned to court. I got 6 points and £300 fine for riding without a motorbike license, no tax, no insurance, no lights, no mot, no helmet for passenger on bike and no road legal tyres! Opinions please? Bit harsh or fair punishment? bear in mind i was probably 200 metres from my house and no more than half a mile from waste land.
Then got 3 points for doing an average of 94mph on way back from Newquay 4 years ago. I think these come off in may.

It got really bad a few years ago with everyone flying up and down the street on those mini-motos and not only were they a nuisance they were dangerous. I'm sure you knew it was an offence to be caught on the bike and the police officer would have no idea how far or how often you did commit the offence. |

Currently clean and have been for some time (at least 6 years)
Been caught several times and had 9 for a while. However, always by a speed camera and always at the crack of dawn on an empty, dry road with a 30mph limit where it changed suddenly from 60. Three times on a dual carriage ways - where I am thinking its 60 but in fact its 30. My fault entirely travelling a a safe speed to suit the conditions but I guess stupid and careless. I now have a pogo alert plus which screams the camera locations at me. I do not intentionally speed in towns but I find it helpful anyway. And I confess I passed the 3 week police driving course - 30 years ago. |

id hoped that as a naive 17 year old boy who had spent 2k of his his savings on a new toy they may have been more lenient but it was nearly 10 years ago so not too worried about it |
