I only got two regular keys with my 5/10 ED 335i (w/ convenience access). Last Jan. though my mom received two regular keys + a plastic emergency with her '07 X5 4.8 (w/o convenience access). Maybe BMW is being cheap w/ the 3s, though not really a big deal to me.

Someone stole the machine they used to make the plastic keys. Now all 3ers that were originally given them are at risk of being stolen. Make sure you park in your garage at night. The plastic key was for emergency use... Incase you lost your key (you're supposed to keep the plastic one in your wallet). BMW Assist can now unlock your car remotely, eliminating the need for it.

what's the use of the plastic key if you can't even start your car with it?
let's just say you lost the keyfob and don't have access to the second one.

You CAN start your car with the plastic key.
To do so: Unlock your car by putting the plastic key in the door. Get the spare fob out of the glove compartment. Place the plastic key into the spare fob. Put the spare fob into the fob slot and off you go. I've actually done this - it's always fun to see posts saying something can't be done when you've done it. Also, I've never heard any story of a plastic key machine being stolen. Not that it would really matter much anyways, there's an RFID chip inside the plastic key. |

Yep, spare fob.
A plastic key by itself wouldn't be of much use, so BMW also created a spare fob for the plastic key to fit into. You need both. Edit - in looking through the 06 E90 manual, it clearly states that the spare key should be placed in a safe place, "such as a wallet." I'll bet that with the number of broken spare keys, they didn't want to keep replacing them (they had to replace mine once). To those thinking that BMW Assist "fixes" this problem, one question - will they start your engine for you too? Last edited by ex-poster; 06-15-2007 at 01:15 PM.. Reason: more info - again |

??? What are you talking about? My question was what's the use of the plastic key in your pocket if you have NO access to either keyfobs? Who will leave an extra keyfob in their glove anyway???

The spare keyfob is *not* a normal keyfob. It does not have the buttons on it to operate the central locking system and cannot start the car without the spare key inserted in to it. It exists only to allow you to start the car with the spare key.
That said, I have an '07 328i and did not get the spare.

I think he means there is a spare fob that is made for this key and will not start the car unless u have the plastic key with the spare fob. the fob itself is not the same as our regular fobs. at least that is what I gather... on my '07 Manual (march production) it doesn't mention anything about a spare plastic key or spare fob.
edit: oops penwan beat me to it |

I've posted this here before -- in a thread titled "plastic spare key".
As of 9/06 the plastic key is no longer standard on the E90 and E91. Though they'd be happy to sell you one. See this TSB: http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B512006g.htm -Ben |
