Long crank ONLY after heat soak
My car is a 2/07 build 335i coupe. After the car sits for 1-2 hrs (heat soak) I have noticed a long crank (3-4 seconds) but no other symptoms. The car starts perfectly in the morning, after sitting for a short time or when cooled down. There are no other symptoms of a failing fuel pump mentioned in other posts. Does anyone else have an extended crank time ONLY after heat soak??

mine did that a lot more often last month... long crank after heat soak. come to think of it, it hasnt happened in the last few weeks. Maybe it was the gas? i remember reading somewhere about the quality of gas (and amnt of ethanol in it) having something to do with it?
or maybe i'm just fooling myself and the fuel pump WILL die in the near future. if it happens it happens...

Actually I should add that at the time I experianced the long crank was when my car was low on fuel, but definatley was not completely empty my "fuel light" had just turned on before I turned the car off.

Fuel pumps usually are fitted with check valves that keep the line pressurized, so in some ways it may be fuel pump related.

I read that BMW states NOT TO USE FUEL WITH ETHANOL !!
Not sure why but I think it is on the gas door as well.

its one of the signs of a failed high pressure fuel pump. not definitive, but cause for concern. if the software update doesnt fix it (and it doesnt seem to in most cases) the fuel pump is on its way out... SITUATION II Customer may complain of: * Excessive cranking time before engine starts (5-6 seconds) on cold start, or after hot soak, * In most cases GT1/DIS diagnosis shows fault code 29DC, and/or 2FBF. CAUSE Sensitivity of the high pressure injection pump (HHP) diagnostic software. CORRECTION On a customer complaint basis only, and when the listed above fault codes are stored in DME memory: * 1. Check vehicle's integration level. * 2. If the integration level is found to be "E089-06-09-540", or lower, then reprogram/recode complete vehicle using PROGMAN V24.02, or higher (target integration level "E089-06-12-510", or higher). * 3. Test drive vehicle after programming to verify effectiveness of the repair. In case, vehicle was already reprogrammed with V24.02 (to the integration E089-06-12-510) and fault codes 29DC, and/or 2FBF/29F1/29F2 are found to be stored in DME; or a high pressure injection pump faults are coming during back during test drive after V24.02 reprogramming then: 1. Perform all applicable DIS/GT1 test plans, mainly B1214_ DI6KHDR/NDR (high pressure fuel system, rail pressure sensor, volume control valve test), and B1612_ STR/SPG/VER (low pressure fuel system check). Test modules may be accessed using the path: Function selection; Drive; Motor Electronics; then High-pressure/Low-pressure fuel system; Test plan. 2. Make sure that a FASTA data is transmitted after completion of all appropriate test modules. 3. Replace the high pressure fuel pump, when prompted by the results of DIS/GT1 test plans. For the pump replacement procedure refer to RA 13 51 017 found in BMW TIS. 4. After replacement, clear adaptation values of the high pressure flow control valve in the DME. Refer to SI B12 16 06 for adaptation reset procedure.

no choice in the NE because of our emissions standards. With MTBE outlawed, the only other oxygenate is ethanol. In NY and NJ its impossible to buy gas that isnt 10% ethanol.

Man, these couple of days it has taken about 4-5 seconds of cranking or whatever you call it before the car starts. I'm starting to think it might be the humidity? Well regardless, I made an appointment with my dealer to bring my car in next Friday. Hopefully, they can resolve the problem before our BBQ meet on July 15.

Apparently it is normal to have occasional long cranks after heat-soak. The car is adapting to the temperature change. I have had sporadic long cranks (3-4 seconds) after the car sits for 1-2 hours since I have owned the car.
