Brake dust

Does the amount of brake dust taper off a bit as time goes by?

Anyone have any tricks for keeping it to a minimum? I'm considering applying some acrylic sealant, but I'd love to hear that it gets better with time.

The car is sparkling, but even a short errand run coats the rims in nasty dust.

I know what you mean...but it's all about daily rim cleaning. I haven't found another way.

nope, it's a mess the whole time

unless you change pads to a less dusty variety

some have used wax on the wheels to make them easier to clean

Daily rim job.....got it

I use P21S wheel cleaner which requires a "sharp jet" of water. This would basically necessitate washing the entire car if I'm going to regularly clean the wheels.

I think the P21S is great, but something more tidy would help if the rims are going to require this much maintenance. Suggestions?

I use the quick wheel detailer...used to use wheel wipes...but they were a lil too messy.

Best way to totally avoid brake dust is to stop using your go slow pedal

There are a few logistical side issues that may crop up using this technique however....

I guess for short trips, one could always use the handbrake for slowing down.

Yes...cuz the handbrake has no link to your brake pads...

But you will cut your brake dust problem in half with the handbrake variant because you will only besmirch your rear wheels.

that's actualy true

the parking brake is a drum brake inside your rear rotors hubs

the parking brake is an entirely separate system from your normal brakes

Let me see if I have this straight:

regular brakes = daily rim job
emerg. brake = hand job

Guess I will just have to alternate!

There is fundamentally something wrong here....Wasn't the clear answer to keeping the wheels clean wax on, wax off?

Yeah...but waxing your wheels is pain in the ass. First step alone (take wheels off of car) is enough to stop me from going that route.

who said you have to take them off the car?

I don't see why you'd have to

Uhhh...get a flash light, walk to your car and look between the rim and the rotor. Tell me that isn't BLACK.
