335i or m3 dilemma?
Hey
I got a question for you all. Background: I've had a e46 m3 for about 4yrs and gave it up this year for a new e90. The new e90 was supposed to be a "filler" car until the new e9x m3 became available. I've leased the car for 30 months and was planning on ordering the car for 2009. Problem is that I LOVE this car. I mean I LOVE this car. I make all kinds of lame excuses to go out so I can drive it. I just put the turbo tuner in it and dynoed it. Got 318 WHP and 326 WTQ. From what I have read that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to tuning potential. So my question is should I go ahead and order the m3? or should I just get a e92 in about a year and modify it exhaust, lsd, sofware and maybe bigger turbos. To the mods I've done a search and got some insight. from other threads. Just want to see what the current members think?

I would go with the M3 because Ive always wanted one. But the 335 coupe is an awesome car that has alot of mod potential. |

As awesome as 335 is, M3 will be on another level. There is a reason why it's an M. Chipped 335 is pretty shweet but M3 will be 420hp out of the box... You've got to respect that. + It sounds amaaaaaaazing, much better than any exhausts on 335 out there...but that's just my opinion.

Order the M3 now. When a demo becomes available test drive it and see if you still like it. You can always give up the spot to someone else.

I think that's a pretty good call. It's what I've done. I'm fairly deep on a waiting list (24), so it will more then likely be '09 before my turn comes up.

Definitely the M3. You may tune it to beat the M3 in a quarter mile but speed isn't everything. There are certain things about an M tuned BMW straight from Germany that cannot be replicated

Thanks for the replies I appreciate it. That is what my feeling is as well. As much as I love my car I loved how my old m3 made me feel. And this m is gonna make the old one feel slow. I mean my current e90 is probably as fast or faster. Still it is a few years away so we'll see. The only reason
Thanks again.

like you, I had 2003 M3, which I traded in for the 335i this past January and took a pretty big hit/loss in monetary terms, and if you traded it in as well for your 335i...I'm sure you took a similar loss as well. that said, if you were to trade in your 335i for the M3, you'll take an even bigger loss. wouldn't be surprised if from the 2 transactions that you'd lose $10 - $15K. of course, if you can afford to take the hit or don't care about that, then go for it. honestly though, if you invested another $5K - $7K into your 335i (exhaust, suspension and wheels/tires), you'll easily outperform the new M3 (in terms of speed and handling) AND you'd save a ton of money in depreciation and trade-in losses. anyway, good luck w/ whatever you do. just remember to think about the financial impact of doing this. |

It just struck me that, although we all know most of the differences, there are things about an ///M that you simply can't order on-line or from a catalog; the car is simply different from BIRTH! I wish they weren't so much money, though. |

All I have to say is it's not that big of a dilemma. Both are good cars and you can have worse things to worry about. I am ordering the M because I always wanted one.

If you havent gotten on the list by now, you wont be getting an M3 anyway, at least not the first year (which may not be a bad thing).
It's pretty funny reading the suggestions to "save your money" by keeping ther current car and modding the crap out of it. Guess how much your super cool modded car will be worth when you do try to get rid of it? You'll lose much, MUCH more on mods then you would trading it in stock. |

Did you bother searching? I just started a thread less than a week ago basically asking the exact same question..
here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66936 I decided on the 335i, even though with $25k worth of mods it will be more expensive than a M3, it will have more power, way more torque, handle better, brake better, and look just as good. That's me though, I like tinkering, and when I can tinker with a turbo motor I get a chub. The M3 has no where near the torque of a PROcede'd 335i, torque makes for a much better street car. Plus you know the old saying, "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races" |

How's that???
So, Mc Laren F1 has 479 ft tq...so you're telling us it would be a close race with the proceded 335... SHumi is crazy then... |

How's that?
Are you serious? How often do you spend your time in the upper 1/3 of the power band when cruising around town? Torque gets you moving, horsepower keeps you moving, there's lots of stop and go during street driving, which makes for a better street car. I cant believe I'm actualy explaining why torque is more important in a street car.. Comparing a Mc Laren F1 to a 335i is just plain retarded.. |

I know what you mean by torque though. But in top end speed 50 to 1xx, HP is king. You may be able to pull on an M5 with a PROcede 335i in the first 50-100ft from a dig but he will blow past your ass at 60-70mph if he keeps his rpm's up. Really though for me that doesn't matter as much as having a real sport suspension with a limited slip differential. For me that is a selling point for the M cars that non-M BMW's don't possess. Still it's a tough decision because all in all I've been surprised how great these new 3-series are.
