Racing and not even knowing it.

Okay, I know this is kind of silly and childish, but I thought it was funny.

I was driving home on Highway 99 last night at about 1:00 AM after a party. It had been raining, so the pavement was wet, and there was a series of red stoplights about every half mile on the four lane highway and a 45 mph speed limit. (I hadn't been drinking much)

I was at a red light in the left lane when a loud red Mustang pulls up next to me on the right, clearly eyeballing the Z and revving his engine. Well, when the light turns green, he gets a little ahead of me, until the next light.

I know it's silly, but just for the hell of it, I gave it just a little more gas at the green, just to be ahead of him to the next light. (Barely hitting 55mph... no big deal... just pushing the pedal down slightly for take off.)

The same thing happens at the next light, and when he pulls up, he's got his window down and is waving. I open the top and he hollers over, "I keep spinning my wheels!". That's when I realize he was actually trying to RACE me, and I didn't even know it!

At the next light, I just can't resist the testosterone, and gun it from the green, letting him hear the wondrous growl of the Z openning up, leaving him WAY behind. With the top down now, I could hear his tires spinning like mad behind me on the wet tarmac. The yellow exclamation point of the DSC flashed me a bit, but he now knew I wasn't even trying before.

He pulls up at the next red, saying "I got nothin'! Just spin!" I just smiled, and let him go that light, to pull behind him for my right turn. He was right, his fat tires were just spinning like crazy, and his rear end fishtailing a bit. He had nothin'.

What kind of mustang was it? He was probably just trying to take off in too low a gear.

I've been driving Mustangs for 24 years now and I can tell you that they have no grab whatsoever on wet pavement. Even if you're not trying to get on it, you get all sorts of wheel spin - there is just not enough weight over the rear axle to hook up all that torque.

That said, assuming it was a GT (or other V8 model) on dry pavement with a halfway competent driver, he would have cleaned your clock in a stoplight race. Of course, you would have him on anything but a straight line. If he put a few bucks into suspension mods, he might surprise you there too ...

Would a Mustang GT kick the pants off a Z4M in the straights on dry pavement?

It would sure be damn close. And you would be surprised how easy and affordable it is to get 500hp+ out of the late model 4.6 liter engine.

doubtfull

ithe old cobra (presupercharged, 300hp) couldn't keep up with an E36 M3(240 hp)

so put a simliar 300 hp mustang against a 330 hp Z4 and the old musty has no chance, even in a straight line

Moral is that anyone can drive a straight line car (see Mustang). They are fast cars with hellacious amounts of torque but with little else. On a autoX or road course they can't brake with a damn.....at that point IMHO, it is the driver not the car. On the streets I ignore them.

Mustang 4.6 V8's.... Well in the wet I have kicked their drawers with my Infiniti FX45. The look on the driver's face - priceless

Oh, definitely. That's why I thought it was funny. Generally speaking, I'm not about to "race" anybody.

He was trying TOO hard, and I wasn't trying at all, and all that power just made him slower.

Stock no way in hell...if he was pushing 500 it'd be alot closer. Would depend on your launch skills.

A stock SVT Cobra will pull 0-60 in 4.5 and a 1/4 mile in 12.9. I'd say that would give a Z4M a good run. At that point, it's more about the driver than the machine.

I had an 02 mustang GT...great low end torque but runs out of breath up top. Opposite of the z4M.
