Update: Wrongly blamed for rental car damage, please help!!
Just an update for those who so kindly helped me out: Enterprise claimed department just called me asking for more information. I presented my case, and then politely reminded her that it is obvious that if this thing goes to court, they really have no ground.
She called the branch and confirmed my story, called me back and said I am absolutely right that the damage could have been there before I rented the car. Branch will pay for it, case closed. I am relieve now, thanks so much for everyone who provided comforting words. I love this community !! Please help. I had a 700 miles round trip in the weekend and I didn't want to drive my 330i so I rented a car from Enterprise. I just returned the rental car this morning, they checked, no problem. I paid and got my receipt. Someone from their office gave me a ride home using the same rental car. 15 minutes later, I received a call from the manager and said there is a "pretty significant" dent on the front bumper! I didn't have any insurance on the car! I went back to take a look, it is at the very bottom left of the front bumper. It is possible to look at the car for 5 minutes and didn’t see the damage, but once you see it, it is quite obvious. I said it wasn't me, I didn't even see it. The manager said we took a look at the car before I rented the car and there was no damage. Now she said some supervisor from Enterprise is going to call me later to deal with this issue. I am really pissed off, as I did not hit anything!! She said maybe someone backed off and hit my car when parked. I am thinking that I have two arguments for dispute: 1. Some people checked when I return my car and I have already gotten my receipt, they didn't see anything. When they used that same car to give me a ride home, some guy is already cleaning it and obviously he didn't see anything. That means the damage is not obvious so it is possible that the manager and I both missed it when she rented the car to me. It could be the previous person. 2. The girl used the same car to give me a ride home; maybe she hit it on the way back? Now I am kicking myself, I should have just drive my own 330i instead of renting a car... When Enterprise call me later, is there anything that I can do?? Please help!!

As long as you got your receipt, the contract is closed. You have no control what happens to the vehicle after it leaves your posession. Tell them to take a hike. Fukkin rental car companies

Yeah I would say that since they checked it when you closed your statement out, any damage after that fact would be their issue not yours.
Since they dropped you off, what's to say that the girl caused it? I would ask that question several times when the main office calls. Sure it's her word against yours but it's also your word against hers. They can't prove either one of you did it. |

Yep...if you got a receipt that the car was taken in with no damages reported...and someone else (either a customer or employee) has driven the car since you turned it in, it is up to them to prove you caused the damages.
It is easier for them to blame you...that way you take responsibility and pay for things. If you stick it to them...then they have to pay for it, their insurance, their employee gets the negative report. Good luck man. This is exactly why I always get the insurance. Yes, its a rip off....but the money is worth not having a headache dealing with these idiots.

Yep, if they signed off on it, and you received the receipt. They can't prove that you damaged the car.

The evidence is on your side. Once they "checked" and provided you with the receipt without acknowledging any damage to the car, the contract is closed and you are clear of any liability.
Worst case, the credit car you used for rental should also cover you in case of any damage.

dont worry as long as you have a reciept. It could have been there before you drove it who knows. The lesson is to look over the car CAREFULLY before you take it off the lot and then when you return it.

I went through this same crap with Enterprise last year!! I didn't have the insurance either. They called me a day later about a significant scratch on the passenger door. They wanted me to come back and see the damage. I told them I had the receipt where the car had been checked out. They must have had 5 different people call me, and I told them all the same thing. I never heard any more from them since then.
As others mentioned, they checked the car out, you paid, its a done deal. You aren't liable. Just be blunt with them and don't let them push you around. If it was 'that' significant, it would have been noticed on the checkout. Good luck. |

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. He returned the car, and they checked it out OK. A few hours later, they called him and told him they found scratches on the hood that was his fault. He told them to sue him and never heard anything else.
Good luck. MD |

Correct--once you were checked out and paid for the car, your ties to it ceased to exist. I would just tell them you didn't do it, and that even if you did--they are coming to you too late to pin any responsibility on your shoulders.

+1 on what's been said. You have the receipt. Case closed. No need to worry, tell them to bite you if you want to add that extra zing

if they send you a bill, sue their ass and recover for time lost at work and the court fees. I think they're just trying to get you to pay for their damage.

Just make sure you hold onto the receipt and you'll be good to go. It's their fault if they did not notice the scratch when you returned the car.
You are NOT liable, I wouldn't worry.

What a great site! God bless the Internet! I've never had a "problem" with any rental company, but I also realized that any dealing with them is a high risk for one. It's better to pay more and go with Hertz or Avis, who seem to take a bit more pride in their reputations. Ever see what passes for a "manager" at these discount rental places? To the OP - I agree with the others that since your reciept was processed and the contract was closed, you should not be liable. Stand up to them and they will probably just go away.
