vibration in the steering wheel
I picked up my 1M in December.
Being winter, I drove off the lot w/ winter tires & rims - the summers were in my wife's SUV. The car runs solid upto 120km/hr but, around 130-140km, I noticed vibrations in the steering wheel. Looking at the "break" in the steering wheel material at the 10 & 3 oclock positions, the break moves 2-3mms up and down when driving straight ahead (hope that's clear). Had the winter tires balanced twice but, that didn't help. The SA agent (via email) told me he's got the same tire/rim combo on his 335i & also notices vibration - i.e. "it's normal, don't worry". Winters came off about a week ago & the factory summers are now on the car. The vibration has virtually disappeared but, not completely. Since the car is supposed to provide an uninhabited feel of the road, I'm wondering if that's all I'm feeling (i.e. the road). I only drive at the higher speeds on the highway & one particular highway that shows the vibration more than others, the surface is a textured asphalt?? (again, hope that's clear) --Antonio Last edited by mangledlftthumb; 04-29-2012 at 05:14 PM.. |

That does not seem normal to me. If the wheels have been balanced, and it has happened with both sets, I would check alignment next then consider an axle problem. There is no way it is normal.

My wheels seem to vibrate when cold. Once I drive for about 5 minutes it goes away.
Then again, I need a new set and re-balance because the rears are down to the metal and don't hold air for more than 2 days. |

Are the rims stock or aftermarket? If aftermarket, check if it is hub centric or not. Try putting a layer or two of duct tape on the hub to make the bore hole tight fit on the hub then reinstall the wheels according to spec. If the vibration is gone, then the rims are not hub centered and you need a hub rings. Remember that the duct tape is just a test material.

Hi,, i have the same issue with my BSM 1M, just wondered if you had any luck solving it, same as you, it seems worse on certain roads which is strange. Going to get the wheels balanced first. Just curious if you had resolved it yet.

i got OEM 270M winter rims on my 1M and i have zero vibrations. It is probably your aftermarket rims causing the vibration. Have them balanced on a road force balancer.

Have you tried using a Road Force Wheel Balancer to balance your wheels and tires?
