Weird brake error...

Today went to get some accessories from the dealer, and as I started my car heading out, I get the "'Service" sign on (one that looks like car is on the lift). Also when I took off my hand brake the little BRAKE sign stayed on. So I head to Service dept, and he reads my key and don't see anything. We go to the car, and start it again and the same happens. We check the control check and it shows the signs with front pads check and then he scrolls further and it shows rear pads check too without any mileage just hyphens. SA was surprised too, saying he never saw it like that with brake pads errors and no mileage showing underneath it. Any one had similar errors? Thanks

Piotr

Unless putting on the Stainless Steel license frame could cause the error. That's the only thing I did when I went to dealer..I put it right there on the spot, got in the car started it up and the error appeared..lol.

I just put up a thread like this last friday. Im too lazy to bring it to the dealer right now. At 2200 miles, I know my pads arent worn out so its probably just a sensor.

SA said only two things can go wrong, brake pads or the sensor. I got almost 15K and just completed 3000 mile trip from east to west coast. I said impossible that brake pads are worn out, he said he's seen it at that mileage. I called my friend who works on the BMWs and he said could be software glitch as well.

So is your BRAKE message staying on all the time, even when the hand brake is released, and showing that you need service? Thanks

It happened to me once while I was driving. Came home that night and planned to call in the morning, but it's gone the next day until now. Probably a problem with the sensor. I'm about to have my break services anyway.

Happened to me last week. I was taking it in anyway, so they looked at it. When they put my keyfob in the reader, it said I was 640,000KM overdue for front brake service! (I only have 5,000KM). They reset it.

Yeah, its on all the time. First thing I thought of was the parking brake but that seems to have its own warning light.

Sorry to bring up an older thread but did you(OP) get your brake service light issue resolved? I am having the exact same symptoms. The car shows the msg: "the brake pads have worn down to the minimum thickness" in the iDrive screen. It's been on a few days but I'm just too busy to take it in. If its a software or sensor issue, I'll just wait until my next paid oil change but if its something else, let us know.

Thanks.

Im still driving around with mine on. Its kind of annoying and I feel there might be something wrong with the pads or sensor for real because the wheels are dusting a LOT more than they should be.

Yes, I took it in, and they reset the error, after checking the pads and rotors thickness and sensors. I still have 10mms on pads, so it's all good. He said it's most likely software. Also two days later the error came back on, so now I'm driving with the error again..I went by the dealer today to see what they say again, and he will ask his shop foreman to call BMW to see what else can be done, but most likely it's the software. Also it depends how many miles you got on your car, he said there was folks that needed brake pads and rotors replaced at 15K miles because of the way they drove. But mine was all good, and I do have 15K miles on it right now. Hope this answers your questions.
