Jerkiness when accelerating after stop

I know this topic has been discussed many times. I just can't find them in the search.

My car jerks forward quite a bit when accelerating after a stop (1st gear). I have the steptronic auto transmission.

The only way I can prevent the jerkiness is if I go VERY VERY slow and accelerate VERY slowly, which pisses the people behind me off.

Has anyone brought their car into the dealership to have this worked on?

I still get it after the car is warmed up. Sucks when you have coffee in the car LOL...

This is because the car starts off in 2nd gear. It takes time for it get get into the power band. Try putting it into sport. This way it will start in first and you will not have the hesitation

It may also be because the engine is cold.

The only thing that happens from time to time, and I doubt it has anything to do with procede, is when the engine is cold, and I press the gas from a stop or slight roll at 5-10 mph, the car may lurch forward when the gas hits the engine and there is a very, very slight pause from when I press the gas and the acceleration starts....and I'm not going wide open throttle, simply pressing the gas to get up to about 40 mph. It doesn't do it everytime, just maybe once every 10 or more days. No bucking and no codes though. I thought it might be turbo lag, but since it doesn't happen all the time, maybe it is just that the engine needs to warm up. It never happens when the engine is warmed up.

--------------
That is correct. When engine temps are cold, the vacuum tanks that control the boost control system are relieved of vacuum. Hence, no boost when the throttle goes down. The vacuum tanks only charge up when the engine is warm.

I brought mine in for this reason, and they completely fixed it with a software update. The newest version of software has step-transmission software updates included. I also had them delete the Neutral Idle Control which disengages & re-engages the torque converter at red lights. Now, it stays connected all the time, and I have no delays or hesitations at all when accelerating from a stop.

I specifically asked for the Neutral Idle Control to be deleted. They were happy to do it, and combined with the updated ECU software (v25.01 I think), solved my similar issue as yours.

Mine is MT and when it is cold it bucks like a rodeo bronco in 1st gear if I accelerate too hard. Pushing and holding the DTC button until the symbol below comes on the dash helps a lot until it warms up. Just need to remember that it's set that way. I am hoping Progman V25 helps it when I get it done in a few weeks.

I wonder if that "Neutral Idle Control" may be resulting in what I had thought were unusually 'grabby' or 'jerky' brakes that I have noticed with my 335? Perhaps that re-engaging torque converter is the culprit. . .

No iDrive here. Everyone with STEP should get these repairs made IMO. (I asked them to disable NIC & that the transmission is jerky at times and doesn't shift smooth from a start.)

I've always been bothered by the jerky nonsense when coming to a stop, and when taking off from a stop. There was always this unpredictable hesitation and random 'thud' / 'bump' feeling; it was one of those things that some people couldn't notice with my car, but I definitely could. It finally bothered me enough to take it in. Both of those issues have been resolved, and I'm now a happy BMW driver.

I do get the gentle jerk too, but I have the automatic. Note that it's quite gentle and only when it's relatively cold. Any issue with this or I'm just overly excited about this whole transmission stuff!?

I had my 335i with auto for several weeks now and the brakes feel like what you are describing...grabby/jerky. I would let the brakes go and they seem to stay engaged for a split second. I wonder if I should have my software checked out. My car was built at the end of March.

I had my e90 330 in for service for grabby brakes - they seem to have fixed it and they indicated there was a TSB out for this issue, they also indicated an issue with the torque converter.

Oh, when I say they fixed it, I mean they got rid of most of it, it's still there to some extent, much much less than before though. I'll have to see if I can't find the TSB...

I was about to say CDV but then I noticed that you had an auto.
I agree with Gort though. Make sure you aren't activating the DSC.
