Getting cars with downpipes inspected in NEPA
Anybody know a place that will pass a car even if it has downpipes? For "a tip" obviously... I'm looking to add DP's and a JB4 but I want to make sure I can get the car inspected after.

If your car has no trace of emissions codes it should pass just about anywhere. We don't do a sniffer test here. STS in fogelsville used to pass my Subaru every year and it was completely catless. They told me "as long as the computer says it's good" they wouldn't ask any questions

I see. I'm assuming I can delete those codes with the JB4, right?

I don't speak JB4 sorry maybe someone else can chime in. On my Subaru I used a laptop to tell my ECU to never look for rear cat efficiency issues so the code would never come on in the first place. I could also "force readiness" too so I wouldn't have to drive around for 300 miles after flashing the ECU.

No sniffer test in this state as noted, they just plug the emissions device into your ODBII port.
TURN OFF the JB4's auto-clear (map 0) two or three days before inspection, otherwise the sensors will be not ready. If they are not ready, you will fail emissions. And if you get an SES light as a result of the downpipes, you'll also fail emissions. With the N54 you can get an O2 sim, look into that (for liability purposes I state: no I do not condone using it to cheat emissions testing).

You will need the BMS downpipe fix in order to pass, b/c if you turn off the jb4, you'll throw a code + SES light due to the catless dp's. If you turn on the jb4 + autoclear, you won't get the readiness code which is what they require. I would just get the inspection done before you put on the dp's.

...which I guess brings me back to "anybody know a shop that looks the other way for a few bucks?" Since inspections come around every year and even if I wait for this one to pass before adding dp's there's always next year to think about. Lol.

I get what you're saying, but it's probably worth it to get the DP fix anyway. If you're paying an extra $30/$40 ea. time at inspection, you'll end up paying for the cost of the fix anyway. Fwiw I went to a shop that 'looks the other way' on a bunch of stuff on my other prev cars, and they weren't willing to pass the emissions w/o the ready code & SES. Not sure if it's b/c they have to send some report to the PA DMV or what..but they didn't budge. I just bit the bullet and bought the dp fix.

OK thanks for the insight. What is that exactly? A coding thing or hardware? Anybody have a link to a good product

There isn't any way to 'look the other way' any more with OBD testing - if you throw a code the car will not pass. It is the same over here in NY.
As others said if your dash is compliant, most places won't even be able to tell nor will they bother to look for cats.

I just had the same problem. I have a JB4 downpipes as well as DP fix. All I did was clear all codes and set the tune to 0. After that I drive around 50 miles took it to inspection and passed with no problem. Hope that helps

I'd jump on a DP fix if it were available for my engine (N55) faster than I'd jump on this:

It might just be a lack of knowledge on my part rather than a new problem. I'm planning on adding dp's and just trying to make sure I don't end up in a situation where I can't get it inspected after.
